Save Me
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nobody wants to see a fool
Nobody wants to see him falling down
Nobody wants to see him cry
Nobody wants to see him lay down and die
Somebody save me, save me from me
Somebody wants to see him try
Somebody wants to see him stay alive
Nobody wants to feel his pain
Nobody wants to see him back on again
Somebody save meâ?¦.take me away from me
Somebody save meâ?¦.save me from me
Man, I've been killing myself
Not been good for my health
So I'm asking myself
Save me from me
Nobody wants to see a fool
Nobody wants to see him falling down
Nobody wants to see him cry
Nobody wants to feel his pain
Nobody wants to see him lay down and die
Somebody save meâ?¦.take me away from me

Somebody save meâ?¦.save me from me
Somebody save meâ?¦. Save me from me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel's "Save Me" delve deep into themes of self-destruction, inner turmoil, and the desire for salvation. The opening lines capture a sense of desperation and loneliness, painting a picture of someone who is struggling and feels isolated in their pain. The repetition of "Nobody wants to see" emphasizes the feelings of being unwanted or unnoticed in their suffering, highlighting the internal battle being faced.

The plea for help becomes more urgent as the singer calls out for somebody to save them from themselves. The juxtaposition of wanting to be saved while also feeling like nobody cares about their well-being creates a poignant contradiction. The lines "Somebody save me, save me from me" illustrate a profound and internal struggle against one's own destructive tendencies.

The admission of self-harm and its detrimental effects on the singer's health adds a layer of vulnerability and raw honesty to the lyrics. The repetition of "Save me from me" reinforces the idea of a battle within oneself, where the biggest enemy is often one's own thoughts and actions. The theme of redemption and the desire to break free from self-destructive patterns is palpable throughout the song.

Ultimately, the repeated pleas for salvation and the acknowledgment of the dark spiral the singer finds themselves in create a powerful and emotionally charged narrative. The desire for a savior, whether external or internal, is poignantly expressed in the lyrics of "Save Me," making it a poignant reflection on the complexities of inner battles and the yearning for redemption and healing.

Good God, don't jump
The boy sat on the ledge
An old man who had fainted was revived (He's all right)
And everyone agreed t'would be a miracle indeed if the boy survived
"Save the life of my child"
Cried the desperate mother
A woman from the supermarket ran to call the cops
"He must be high on something", someone said
Though it never made the New York Times
In the Daily News the caption read
"Save the life of my child"
Cried the desperate mother
(Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again)
A patrol car passing by halted to a stop
Said Officer McDougall in dismay
"The force can't do a decent job
'Cause the kid's got no respect for the law today"
(And blah, blah, blah)
"Save the life of my child"
Cried the desperate mother
"Oh, what's become of the children?"
People asking each other
When darkness fell, excitement kissed the crowd and it made them wild
In the atmosphere of freaky holiday
When the spotlight hit the boy and the crowd began to cheer
He flew away
Oh, my grace, I've got no hidin' place
Oh, my grace, I've got no hidin' place
Oh, my grace, I've got no hidin' place
Oh, my grace, I've got no hidin' place
Oh, my grace, I've got no hidin' place

One of my top favorites of all time. This LP is pure brilliance from beginning to end.

@whatswithgus

After the quiet introduction to the album I remember nearly jumping out of my skin when I heard the first few seconds of this song. It sounded like nothing I had ever heard from S&G, or from the 1960s for that matter. I can only imagine how people back in 1968 reacted to it.

@kroakie4

They probably got goose bumps. Lol

@edscottaz

We turned up the volume, a lot

The choir never fails to give me chills

@alexadvorson1090

I just listened again for the first time in years. This song was part of the life-changing soundtrack of my youth. The choir made me cry--the anguish and despair sums up the current moment perfectly.

@musiccollector

An iconic album that I have to listened to hundreds of times..

@musickluvrr

I remember listening to these guys with huge head phones on at my dad's house, lol. I listened to them over & over for hours until he'd finally have to turn it off so I would eat. Then right back to the stereo. S&G were the reason I fell in love with music, & they were the musical geniuses of their time..

@SiliconBong

+musickluvrr I'm using a pair of huge headphones right now :)
The cheap/mid priced 'phones that are easily found simply don't last long enough/or are hardy enough to have any more than a couple of years life in them. My most recent purchase lasted about two and a half months before losing a channel, so I went into my 'boxes of stuff' and pulled out some [marantz sd-5] with the 6.35 plug. While not reverberating with the crispness of a pair of brand new sennheiser 'phones they're adequate for listening to the tubes :)

@epipd5712

+musickluvrr I did the same thing. I played every album I had by them so much, that I know about all the lyrics to everyone of their songs including "Punky's Dilemma". I had my headphone on too, cause the music was loud. ehehe.

Seriously , great musicians and happy I was able to see them on tour at Grant Field , Atlanta , Ga. A night i will never forget.
