The Sun Is Burning
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sun is burning in the sky
Strands of clouds go slowly drifting by
In the park the lazy bees
Are joining in the flowers, among the trees
And the sun burns in the sky

Now the sun is in the West
Little kids go home to take their rest
And the couples in the park
Are holdin' hands and waitin' for the dark
And the sun is in the West

Now the sun is sinking low
Children playin' know it's time to go
High above a spot appears
A little blossom blooms and then draws near
And the sun is sinking low

Now the sun has come to Earth
Shrouded in a mushroom cloud of death
Death comes in a blinding flash
Of hellish heat and leaves a smear of ash
And the sun has come to Earth

Now the sun has disappeared
All is darkness, anger, pain and fear
Twisted, sightless wrecks of men

Go groping on their knees and cry in pain
And the sun has disappeared

Overall Meaning

The song "The Sun Is Burning" by Simon & Garfunkel is a deceptively simple song with a powerful message. The lyrics go through the sequence of the sun rising in the sky and setting in the west, symbolizing the passage of time and the cyclical nature of life. The bees in the park joining in among the flowers add to the peaceful imagery of nature. As the day moves on, couples in the park hold hands and wait for the dark, perhaps representing the comfort of companionship in difficult times. Even as the day is ending, a little blossom appears, bringing hope and new beginnings.

However, the tone of the song takes a drastic turn in the last stanza. It talks about the sun coming to the earth, shrouded in a mushroom cloud of death. This is a metaphor for the atomic bomb and the destruction it wrought. The "blinding flash of hellish heat" and "smear of ash" are haunting images that illustrate the devastating power of nuclear weapons. The last stanza is a somber reminder that even as we go about our daily lives, the threat of destruction is always present.

Overall, "The Sun Is Burning" is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the need for peace.

A criminally underrated song.

This album - THIS SONG (and Poem On The Underground Wall) - affected me so greatly when I first heard them, heard the words, at my child age of nine in 1970...
To this day, the line “twisted sightless wrecks of men, go groping on their knees and cry in pain” still TEARS ME UP inside...
This pair of singer-songwriters and their incredible legacy STILL amazes me.

Well, the songwriter of this one is Ian Campbell.
And you NEED to listen to Luke Kelly's delivery.

@HotelPapa100 I find that both performances capture an aspect of valid emotions when it comes to the threat of nuclear annihilation. Luke Kelly brings anger at the idiots that create this world and the danger to it, where Simon and Garfunkels eerie and haunting rendition emphasizes the absurdity that such a situation is possible and how the threat exists in a differen realm of sorts, one where us regular people have not opportunity to stop anything.

same same same. ❤️

My favorite group. : ) But comprised of a singer-songwriter paired with a better (or at least prettier-voiced) singer. Garfunkel had a very big hand in the arrangements, but the original songs of S&G were written by Paul Simon. Garfunkel has just one songwriting credit to his name, for the Canticle part of Scarborough Fair/Canticle -- and that was for rewriting lyrics Simon had written for an earlier song.
As others here have pointed out, "The Sun is Burning" was written by Ian Campbell.

Two ethereal lines "The lazy bees are droning in the flowers among the trees" and "A little blossom blooms and then draws near", are beyond words in the emotions and images they conjure. You could almost write a short story based on those two lines alone. The Ian Campbell Group's version has a slightly different and even more dreamy vision of the bees.
