The Times They Are a-Changin'
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come on, gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'

Come writers and critics
Who prophesies with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'

Come senators, Congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorways
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he that has stalled
There's a battle outside ragin'
Will soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'

Come mothers and fathers
All over the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly aging
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
And the present now
Will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin'
The first one now
Will later be last

For the times they are a-changin'
For the times they are a-changing

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel’s song “The Times They Are a-Changin’” touch on political and social change during the 1960s, when the song was written. Dylan’s version of the song contains similar themes, and it has since become one of the most influential protest songs. The first verse suggests that society must acknowledge that the world is changing and the waters around us are rising, and we must be prepared to adapt or be left behind. The second verse, directed at writers and critics, implies that even those who have traditionally been critical of change must pay attention to the turning tides. The third verse addresses politicians by saying they must take action or suffer the consequences of being left behind. The fourth verse is directed at parents, suggesting that the younger generation will not be stopped by the old ways of thinking. The final verse suggests that there is no going back and that those who do not adapt will be left behind.

The song was written during a period of great turmoil and change in the United States, with the Civil Rights Movement in full swing and the Vietnam War escalating. The song reflects the frustration and impatience of a generation that was coming of age and demanding change. Although the song was written in response to specific events, it has since become an anthem for social change and political action. It has been covered by countless artists and has remained relevant throughout the years.

only 3 dislikes!! Must be some kind of record for YouTube, lol. However, it just goes to show the enduring genius of these two AWESOME performers. Nice arrangement too: for the best blend of those two very delightful voices. Me happy.

Paul Caton

This really is a great cover.

trish cajutol

great song sung by two of my most favorite singers of all time because they are superbly gifted & i like the humbleness of paul simon & the soprano voice of garfunkel.i admire their blending techniques w/c is rare in most artists, since time immemorial!

Caleb Morris

Love this cover.

Bob Dylan song that is 55 year old...and becomes consistently more relevent every year. Never knew S&G did this cover which is, of course, great...though Dylan's original gravelly version perhaps fits the genre better.

Imagine if Paul Simon did not turn out to be such a great songwriter. Well, I think this shows that S&G would have had a successful career as interpreters of others works. Their voices on a whole album of Dylan covers sounds very appealing.
