Why Don't You Write Me
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why don't you write me
I'm out in the jungle
I'm hungry to hear you.

Send me a card,
I am waiting so hard
To be near you.
(La, la, la)
Why don't you write?

Something is wrong
And I know I got to be there.
Maybe I'm lost,
But I can't make the cost
Of the airfare, ooh

Tell me why (Why)
Tell me why (Why)

Why don't you write me,
A letter would brighten
My loneliest evening.

Mail it today
If it's only to say
That you're leaving me.
(La, la, la)

Monday morning, sitting in the sun
Hoping and wishing for the mail to come.
Tuesday, never got a word,
Hm
Wednesday, Thursday, ain't no sign,
Drank a half a bottle of iodine.
Friday, woe is me
Gonna hang my body from the highest tree.
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?

Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?

Overall Meaning

The song "Why Don't You Write Me" by Simon & Garfunkel is a beautiful piece that echoes the pain and desperation of a lover craving communication with their partner who is away in the jungle. Through the lyrics, the artist depicts a sense of urgency to reconnect with the partner, who is not replying to any of their letters. The lyrics depict the longing of someone sitting and waiting patiently, yet feeling ignored and abandoned.

The song features a monotonous melody, amplified by Simon and Garfunkel’s signature harmonies, which makes the lyrics more expressive. When the lyrics say “I’m out in the jungle; I'm hungry to hear you”, it conveys the image of a lover being trapped in a foreign and unfamiliar place, striving to connect their partner. The wordings “Something is wrong and I know I got to be there,” show a sense of urgency and despair, accompanied by the statements “Maybe I’m lost, but I can’t make the cost of the airfare.”

The chorus, “Why don't you write me? A letter would brighten my loneliest evening. Mail it today if it's only to say that you're leaving me,” highlights the pain of the singer on not getting any response from their partner, despite being in a long-distance relationship. The feelings of frustration and abandonment the singer feels when they cannot receive any communication from their partner is further shown when he sings about harming himself.

the whole album is GREAT

This is a great song. Whether it was his girlfriend or Art whose absence and inability to write that was upsetting him, it is still, in my mind, second only to Bridge over Troubled Water as my favourite of his songs. Its a great dance beat to me anyway. (He would have no problem now: he could tweet, text, skype, face-book. They would be sick of each other in no time!)

Many songs on Bridge over Troubled Water are about Artie. Paul is famous for his oversized ego so watching his partner leave to Mexico instead of sticking around to finish the album must've felt like a very hurtful rejection, one that he's spent years bitter about. Conventional narrative tends to make it about the wife/girlfriend because apparently it's a scary concept that men have a wide range of human emotions that go beyond their romantic or sexual partners. If Artie had been a girl everyone would call BOTW their breakup album. Which, you know, it was.

@defaultc00kies yes but also that isn’t the full story. It’s not the fact he left. Paul said it was ok for him to leave, it was the fact that was supposed to be 3 months of shooting ending up being half a year of filming in the middle of recording an album which wasn’t the original plan, and of course the fact art didn’t reall write him

Love that bari sax solo in the middle. Shows how beautifully retro these guys were back then. Fact is that they were heavily influenced by the Everly Bros and all the great music that came before them. They paid homage to it. And now they're the music of our memories. Bless Simon and Garfunkel!

John Blake

If you listen again, I think you'll find it's a sax duet.
