You Don't Know Where Your
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

You don't know that you love me
You don't know but I know that you do
You may think that you're above me, yeah
What you think isn't always true

Don't try to debate me,
You should know that I'm womanly wise
Still you try to manipulate me
You don't know where your interest lies

No, you don't know where your interest lies
You don't begin to comprehend

You're just a game I like to play
You may think that we're friends all right
But I won't let friendship get in my way,
No, I won't let friendship get in my way,

Indications indicate running the same riff will turn you around
Obviously you're going to blow it,
But you don't know it

You don't know that you love me
You don't know but I know that you do
You may think that you're above me, yeah
What you think isn't always true

Don't try to debate me,
You should know that I'm womanly wise
Still you try to manipulate me
You don't know where your interest lies

No, you don't know where your interest

Overall Meaning

lies” is a song that speaks about unrequited love, manipulation, and the boundaries between friendship and romantic relationships. In the song, the singer expresses her frustration with a person who is unaware of their own feelings towards her, and who also tries to manipulate her. She asserts her own independence, refusing to let their friendship interfere with her own feelings. The repeated phrase ‘You don’t know where your interest lies’ highlights the confusion and uncertainty that can arise in relationships, as well as the danger of assuming that one’s feelings are reciprocated.

The song’s lyrics also point to a power dynamic between men and women, with the singer asserting her own female wisdom, while also acknowledging the other person’s attempts to control the situation. The use of the phrase ‘womanly wise’ implies a particular kind of experience and knowledge that comes from being a woman, one that the other person does not possess. The repeated phrase ‘You don’t know that you love me’ captures the sense of frustration that can arise when one person is aware of their own feelings, but the other is not. It also lays bare the vulnerability of being in love with someone who does not feel the same way.

Overall, the song speaks to the complexities of relationships, and the challenge of navigating the boundaries between friendship and romance. It highlights the importance of being aware of one’s own feelings and communicating them effectively, as well as being respectful of others’ boundaries and emotions.

As a young lad decades ago, I used to see sheet music for this song in a Paul Simon songbook. I'm delighted to hear it at last!

This album was released when I was ten years old. I heard many of the songs on the radio back then in the '60s. When I was 14 my sister got the album and played it every day. I now have the cd and still love listening to it. My daughter recently got a turntable and asked me for suggestions on singer song writer type records from the '60s and this was the first one I thought of. She now has it. I'm waiting to hear how she likes it.

I was just 5 years old when this album came out. I played it over and over as my mother tried to dissuade me from listening to my older brother’s albums, which included Uriah Heap and Black Sabbath. The one line from this album that always stuck with me throughout my life was the following: “God forgive me…but an old person without money is pathetic.” You hear it on the track that was apparently recorded in an old people’s home. Very powerful and very true.

I didn't know that I knew so many of their songs, but this is my favorite. all the others are so overplayed, I even choreographed to bridge in high school. it's so wonderfully short and upbeat

@berretta9mm17

Very reminiscent, in many spots, of the song "Hazy Shade of Winter" - that 12-string. Signature Paul Simon early sound - great cut. Thank you for uploading

@janjones4959

Love this album still play it often,

@winterlongone

this song is on the 'bookends' album. it's a very interesting song. the lyrics and the way it's layered at the end leaves the listener quite open to interpretation, i feel. i've tried to figure it out and i can't. it fascinates me.
