Playing R&B around the Portsmouth area (home of the Shulman brothers) under various names, the band took the name Simon Dupree & the Big Sound in early 1966. Making up the rest of the group were Peter O'Flaherty (bass guitar) (born 8 May 1944, in Gosport, Hampshire), Eric Hine (keyboards) (born Eric Raymond Lewis Hines, 4 September 1944, in Portsmouth, Hampshire), and Tony Ransley (drums) (born Anthony John Ransley, 17 May 1944, in Portsmouth, Hampshire). Simon Dupree & the Big Sound' was chosen in the course of their search for a flashy name.
They broke through at the end of 1967 with the psychedelic "Kites", a Top 10 hit in the UK Singles Chart. Regarding themselves as blue-eyed soul brothers, they hated it as it was so unrepresentative of their usual style.
The group released one studio album, "Without Reservations", on Parlophone Records (1967), and a compilation Amen (1980). The set, Part of My Past (2004), includes all their singles, album tracks and previously unreleased material prepared for their second album, release of which was cancelled at the time.
In late 1968, they released a single "We Are Th e Moles (Part 1)/(Part 2)" under the moniker The Moles.
Frustrated as being seen as one-hit wonders being pushed by their record label as a pop group rather than the soul band they had always intended to be, they disbanded in 1969 and the Shulman brothers went on to form the progressive rock group Gentle Giant.

When the wind is high, When the wind is high
I will float a silver solid moon through your window
If your night is dark, If your night is dark
In letters of gold on a snow white kite I will write " I love you!"
And send it soaring high above you For all to read
I will scatter rice paper stars in your heaven
If there are no stars, If there are no stars
All of these and seven wonders more will I find
When the wind is high, When the wind is high
In letters of gold on a snow white kite I will write "I love you!"
And send it soaring high above you For all to read
No one say you need (unintelligible Asian sounding words)
In letters of gold on a snow white kite I will write " I love you!"
And send it soaring high above you For all to read
The song Kites by Simon Dupree & The Big Sound is a beautiful love song that describes the lengths a person is willing to go to in order to express their love for someone else. The lyrics suggest that the person is willing to fly a yellow paper sun or a silver solid moon in the sky for their loved one, and even write "I Love You" on a snow white kite to send it soaring high above them for all to read.
The words "when the wind is high" are repeated several times throughout the song, indicating that the person is waiting for the perfect moment to make their grand gesture. The lyrics also express the idea of adding beauty to someone's life, by scattering rice paper stars in their heaven and finding even more wonders when the wind is high.
Overall, the song is a romantic and poetic expression of love, with the imagery of kites serving as a metaphor for the soaring emotions of the person singing the song.

1967 was the best year for music in the 1960s. This is just one shining example of the great songs that were issued that year.
