If anyone's curious, this is "Rain on the Roof" from Stephen Sondheim's Follies. It's about a minute long and sometimes a part of a single track which also contains "Ah Paris" and "Broadway Baby" It happens early in the show and wasn't included in the original 1971 production (was added in 1985 for the Lincoln Center run). Ziegfeld's Follies were lavish shows, and often included beautiful women walking down a large central staircase, just like in the prison. Whoever answered the call for a minute-long musical number for the end of Paddington 2 really knocked it out of the park with this choice. No story, just vague and delightful lyrics that can be easily transformed into a showstopping group number. Love both Paddington movies and Sondheim <3

"Rain on the Roof" was definitely part of the original 1971 production of Follies -- it's part of a sequence called "Montage", in which "Rain on the Roof", "Ah, Paris", and "Broadway Baby" are first sung separately and then all sung simultaneously in counterpoint. But it was omitted from the original cast album, and the other two songs were truncated to just one verse each. This and similar trims in other songs, made to keep the recording of the enormous Follies score down to one LP, are why the original cast recording of Follies is regarded as a fiasco.

Part of the joke in Paddington 2 is that "Rain on the Roof" was originally a modest little charm song, nothing like the enormous production number that Hugh Grant's character stages in prison.

I’ll enjoy it as I love the second film it’s my four of the 2 especially for the villain Hugh grants character is great I love him he’s great in every scene he’s in and he’s very entertaining and I like how he has a happy ending. It’ll be interesting to see what we get for Paddington 3 xx

The prison is in Kilmanham Gaol in Dublin and it was used by the British army and when Ireland rebelled in 1916 it held the leaders of the rising and they were shot in May. The dancing was recorded in a studio but they used cgi to have it in Kilmanham.

I believe the reason is because he’s not a completely evil man and tbh his reasons for needing to steal the treasure are pretty reasonable and for some people relatable. Also Phoenix Buchanan is a very charming man who knows how to make people like him and tbh he’s not that horrible of a person he stole the book to find the treasure so he could get his big musical number up and running so he wasn’t a poor man anymore who had to do dog food adverts to keep the money coming in. Xx

For y'all who don't know, this scene was filmed in the Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, Ireland. I'm currently on vacation in Ireland and went on a tour of this jail yesterday and I WAS IN THIS ROOM at one point! When you know what happened in this jail (*cough* beheadings cough executions *cough*) then it makes this scene so weird because so much death happened here but this scene is so happy. Look it up if you dare. Our guide was super nice and made sure we were okay. The story of Joseph Plunkett and Grace Chiffort is especially interesting but very sad. This room is actually really huge and echoey! Such a cool experience! Recommend it if you're ever in Dublin!
