Simple Minds Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When you do the things you do
Time and time again
And when i try to play it wrong
You turn from smooth
You play it rough once again
You make me cry
You make me cry
You make me cry again
You make me cry
You make me cry
Saturday, same old story
Sunday mornings wounded glory repeats again
And every day a dream is born
Is counted by a love that's torn, deep again
You make me cry
You make me cry again
And the tears roll by
You make me cry again
You make me cry
And you make me cry
You make me cry
You make me cry again
Tide? that turns me into this ocean
Subsides again
So high and so dry
With this bitter emotion lies again
You make me cry
You make me cry
And you make me cry
Stop making me cry
Stop making me cry
And you make me cry
You make me cry
The lyrics to Simple Minds's song "Cry" express the pain and frustration that comes with being in a love-hate relationship. The singer is having difficulty loving their partner when they repeatedly engage in hurtful behavior. They try to "play it wrong" but the partner responds by being even rougher. The singer then conveys how they cry again and again because of the partner's actions.
The second verse describes how this pain is a recurring theme in the relationship - the same story repeats every Saturday and Sunday. The singer's dreams are constantly overshadowed by the fact that their love is torn apart by the partner's behavior. The chorus then repeats, highlighting the fact that the partner is causing the pain and tears that the singer is experiencing.
The bridge uses a metaphor of a tide that ebbs and flows, much like the singer's emotions. The bitterness and pain that the singer feels because of the partner comes and goes, but it always returns. The final repetition of the chorus shows the resolution that the singer seeks - they want the partner to stop causing them pain and tears.
