Don
Simple Minds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh, oh

Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing, you know it baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out
And love's strange so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby

Don't you forget about me
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you forget about me

Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down

Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh, oh

Don't you try to pretend
It's my feeling, we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity and security

Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing, you know it baby
Going to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby

Don't you forget about me
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you forget about me

As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away

Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on, call my name
Will you call my name?

I say, la la la

When you walk on by
And you call my name

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Simple Minds' song "Don't You (Forget About Me)" express the insecurities and longing of a person who is reaching out to someone they have feelings for. They dance alone while singing to the object of their affection, asking them to come see about them and tell them their troubles and doubts. The singer is giving their all to this person, hoping that they will not forget about them. However, the singer is also aware that love is strange and sometimes pulls people apart. They hope that the light will get into the other person's heart and keep them together.

Throughout the song, the singer asks the recipient of their affection to not forget about them. They ask if the other person will stand above them and look their way, recognizing them and not walking away. They promise that they won't harm the other person or touch their defenses, and hope that they will eventually put them back together at heart. The song ends with the singer singing "la la la" as the other person walks by, hoping that they will call their name and not walk away.

Overall, the song captures the vulnerability and pleadings of someone who is hopelessly in love and hoping for reciprocation from the other person.

The song reminds me when I bought a new car. January 15th 1985. An '85 Camaro. It had 12 miles on it. When I turn on the radio, this was the first song that was playing. I'll never forget that.
