Let There Be Love
Simple Minds Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Whisper tonight
Broken down angel
Got lost in the cold daylight
The city is screaming
And I look for your eyes
Someone to lean on through the night
Your music talks to me and hits me tonight
So let there be love
Let there be love, oh yeah
Love
Let there be love, ooh yeah
It heals and it hurts
She leads you to heaven's door
And leaves you for dirt
Someone to lean on, that's your own
Some magic conquers me and lives in my soul
She comes like an ocean, I hear you sing
Love will conquer anything
Let there be love
Let there be love, oh yeah
Love
Let there be love
The wall's down
They're coming down
I can't slow
I know it now
So stay now
Hold on
And I'm praying
So let there be love
Let there be love, oh yeah
Love
Let there be love, ooh yeah
I know what I want
I know what I feel
I know what I want, oh right
So let there be love
Let there be love, oh right
The lyrics of Simple Minds’ “Let There Be Love” express a heartfelt desire for love and connection amidst the chaos of the world. The opening lines talk about the secrets that lovers share with each other, and the longing for a partner who can be leaned upon through the night. The broken-down angel is a symbol of a lost and lonely soul who is searching for a way out of the darkness. The city is screaming and the singer is looking for someone whose eyes he can connect with. The music is a source of comfort and helps the singer to feel better.
The chorus of the song is a plea for love to conquer all. The line “It heals and it hurts” refers to the bittersweet nature of love. It can bring joy and happiness, but it can also be painful and hurtful. The singer acknowledges that love can lead to heaven’s door but can also leave you in the dirt. Still, he believes that it is worth it to have someone to lean on and to experience the magic that love can bring.
The bridge of the song talks about tearing down walls and letting love in. It is a call to stay and hold on, to pray for love to conquer all. The final chorus is an affirmation of love and the conviction that the singer knows what he wants and feels. The song is ultimately a celebration of the power of love to unite people and bring hope in difficult times.

Simple Minds ? What can you say about one of the greatest bands ever ! Timeless music and takes me back to my youth when life was simpler than now in 2022. I’m 60 and the 80s were undeniably the greatest for the best music. I listen to all my 80s music and I’m 17 again !
