Midnight Walking
Simple Minds Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'd come to the conclusion
Goin' out midnight walking
May be the only way to go now
The age where it's essential
To keep it for memento
We're goin' out midnight walking
Trying to find somewhere to go now
We go high, high, high
Little the lonely lone
High, high, high
Found somewhere to go now
We go high, high, high
Are those people
Little the lonely lone
Silent people
We're goin' out midnight walking
Trying to find somewhere to go now
Find somewhere to go now
The itch of desperation
There's some new evaluation
We're goin' out midnight walking
'Cause it's the only way to go now
And the age where it's essential
To make up transcendental
We go out midnight walking
We go through heat wave after snow now
We go high, high, high
Little the lonely lone
High, high, high
Found somewhere to go now
We go high, high, high
Are those people
Little the lonely lone
Silent people
We're goin' out midnight walking
Trying to find somewhere to go now
Find somewhere to go now
High, high, high
Are those people
Silent people
High, high, high
Watching people
Trying to find somewhere to go now
And are those people
Silent people
High, high, high
Along the people
Found somewhere to go now
We go high, high, high
Little the lonely lone
We go high, high, high
Watching people
Trying to find somewhere to go now
The lyrics of "Midnight Walking" by Simple Minds may appear cryptic at first glance. However, in-depth analysis suggests that the song talks about the human condition during a state of confusion and desperation. The singer posits that they had reached a conclusion about life, and it was time to go out midnight walking. This means that they needed to search for something more profound outside of their mundane routine existence. The song outlines that, in life, there comes a time when it is essential to keep memories for mementos or to make up transcendental things to direct one's life. In doing so, one has to go out midnight walking, searching for "somewhere to go now."
The chorus reinforces the transcendent idea. The lyrics "We go high, high, high, little the lonely lone" suggest that the singer feels lonely but is driven to search for something higher. The lines "We go through heat wave after snow now" metaphorically emphasize that life is full of highs and lows, but it is essential to keep moving forward. The singer explains that everyone has some itch of desperation that drags them to search for something new.
