Don't Cry For Me Argentina
Sinéad O'Connor Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love
After all that I've done
You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl
You once knew
To the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen
I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life
Down at heel
Looking out of the window
Staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around trying
Everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it too
Don't cry for me argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
And as for fortune
And as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world
They were all I desired
They are illusions
They are not the solutions
They promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more
I can think of to say to you
But all you have to do is
Look at me
To know that every word is true
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
In Sinéad O'Connor's rendition of the song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," she speaks to the audience as if they are the country of Argentina, which is struggling with political instability and the repercussions of the Dirty War. The song begins with her acknowledging the difficulty in explaining her emotions to the audience, even though she still needs their love after all she has done. She acknowledges that people will only see the person they once knew, even though she has changed and dressed up to the nines. O'Connor then sings about how she had to let things happen in her life and change, leaving behind the life of being downtrodden and staying out of the sun. She chose freedom and tried everything new, but nothing impressed her. She then breaks into the famous refrain “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” where she reassures the audience that she never left them and that she loves them. She speaks about how she never wanted fortune or fame; they are illusions that seem desirable to the world. The answer was always there in the form of the love she has for the audience. The song ends with her reiterating her love while asking if she has said too much and imploring the audience not to keep their distance.
The lyrics of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" illustrate O'Connor's heartfelt attempt to reach out to Argentina and reassure her love for the country, its people, and its culture. She acknowledges that her life, and perhaps even her mistakes, have led her to where she is. However, she wants to bridge the gap caused by centuries of colonization and create a connection with the Argentine people. Although the song's message might appear straightforward, the lyrics offer an opportunity for interpretation and analysis as to the complexities of the relationship between people and their homeland.

Sinéad always just sang. No gimmicks, no devices, no lipsynching, no autotune, no big production. Just her beautiful voice and a microphone. And she was so compelling. There truly aren’t any top-tier singers like that anymore. We’ve lost a legend.

Sinead's passing hit harder than I expected. Of a similar vintage to her in age, Nothing Compares blasted out when I was at university. What a searing and enduring image, her looking straight down the barrel of the camera for that video. We all have our struggles, she was so authentic about hers. And now here we are. As others have said, a true hero for people, rather than the heroes we are normally encouraged to aspire to.
