I Dream Of You
Sinatra Family Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're completely unaware, dear, that my heart is in your hand
So for love's sake won't you listen and try to understand?
I dream of you more than you dream I do
How can I prove to you this love is real?
You mean to me more than you mean to be
When I am close to you the world is far away
The words that fill my heart my lips can't seem to say
I want you so more than you'll ever know
More than you dream I do, I dream of you
I want you so more than you'll ever know
More than you dream I do, I dream of you
"I Dream of You" by the Sinatra Family is a love song that expresses the genuine emotions of someone who is hopelessly in love with their significant other. The song opens with a gentle plea for the person to understand the depth of their feelings. The singer implores the listener to recognize that their heart is in their hand and to listen to what they have to say. The first verse dives deep into the idea that the singer dreams of the person more than the person dreams of them, almost as if they're trying to convince the person that their love is real. The second verse talks about how the person means more to the singer than they realize, and despite their best efforts, they just can't seem to express the way they feel about them. The final verse repeats the previous sentiments, with the singer emphasizing that they want the person more than they could even know. The chorus acts as a refrain, with the singer repeating the fact that they dream of the person more than they dream of the singer.
The song deploys a few poetic techniques to reinforce its message. Throughout the song, there is a sense of longing and affection that colors the lyrics, particularly with how the singer repeats that they dream of the person. There's also a persistent sense of hope in the song, with the singer holding out the possibility that the person may someday understand their feelings. The words "dream" and "prove" act as an antithesis, with the former referring to something unreal and intangible, while the latter denotes something concrete and plausible. This creates a compelling clash of ideas that reinforces the sense of longing and hope that pervades the song.
Overall, "I Dream of You" is a touching love song that captures the raw emotions of someone deeply in love. It emphasizes the idea that love can be unrequited, but that doesn't stop someone from feeling it nonetheless. The song speaks to the pain of unrequited love, but also leaves room for the possibility that the person might someday recognize and return those feelings.

Anyone else remember the lyrics being, “I’ll be home for Christmas, you can count on me” instead of, “I’ll be home for Christmas, you can plan on me”

The song was written in 1943 to honor the soldiers who longed to be home for Christmas. It's quite sad to think about the military being home for Christmas "only in their dreams".
