@ronald dump I noticed this also. Beginning at 4:00 he is really confusing a lot of trig challenged people. He knows what you say is true, but what he says is going to be confusing to a lot of people
Also, he suggests that if you add up the 2 components you are going to get the force along the hypot. 3 + 4 is not 5

I doubt it. Sine, cosine, etc are incredibly simple. very basic concepts. Literally stuff you should have visualized before you ever took that trig class. If you didnt understand it immediately, maths simply wasnt for you. Its likely that at that age, you just were not interested. (So often in HS, all we are interested in is the hairy end of a belly.) But ultimately it was not your teachers fault that you werent interested in basic maths/trig

Good Lecture. One observation: from the Physics point of view, when you decompose the 5N force into the horizontal and vertical components, these components need to have the same origin ... also common with the 5N force .This would also help when you use the projection on the y direction.

But I can see many coming out of this vid, not understanding some things very well, just because of what you point out here.

Its kind of like in gradeschool, the teacher always drew a dramatic ellipse on the blackboard when examining orbit of planets. (And they did that for good reasons). 95% of people today, if asked, will state that the orbit path of earth is a visible ellipse, because of this teaching method.. The orbit path of earth, Ven, Nep, are basically "exact" circles. If you want to draw them, in scale, on paper, you cannot do better than use a students compass. And the rest of them, if the foci are disguised are basically visible circles, but if you examined them with a ruler you could find the MA and mA with some accuracy, (especially Merc and Plu) . You could never do that with Earth, Ven, Nep

Great! After more than 65 years, when I was at school with a bad Maths teacher, i am beginning to understand the basics of sine and cosine. At my school in Drumchapel, Scotland in the sixties I was completely confussed by trigonometry. After this lesson I now understand the meaning of Sine & Cos and now I just want to learn more from you to prove to myself I was not really the dummy I thought I was. Keep doing what your doing, it makes a big difference.

I particularly liked the concept of chopping with the example of shining a torch over the hypotenuse. Assuming it was a log leaning against an erect wall, its shadow would be chopped down on a horrizontal plane surface. This will determine the ratio for sine theta. Same for vertical.

We learned this as SOH-CAH-TOA. Sin is opposite over hypotenuse, cosine is adjacent over hypotenuse and tangent is opposite over adjacent.

OMW... this man is amazing! I was never good at Math at school. I once got a double FF in Math, so hopeless was I. I became a teacher and my most loved subject was and is Maths. I'm retired now, but I still want to learn Math on a higher level as a hobby, and to exercise my brain to keep Alzheimer's and Dimentia away.
I can't believe that I actually grasp Sin and Con in this one lesson. You are an amazing teacher! I love the way you use different color markers. One tends to pay more attention because of the colors...and you're highly articulated too and your explanations are excellent. You also don't erase your stuff, which I like. The brain can thus make the connections by going back and forth. As a Grade 3, 4 and 5 Math teacher, I also made up my own little (sometimes silly) 😃 rules ( not found in textbooks), for the students to remember some strategies. I've subsribed to your channel 😍

So I brought the worksheet home to solve so I can help my class on Monday. Dear Teacher, I am writing to inform you that for the first time in my life (I'm 55 years old), I have finally understood the Trig functions concept. I have read a million times, over the years that the angle sin0 is Opp/Hyp, but I have never understood what the heck everyone was talking about until I watched this videos. Everything fits into place for me now. Why am I even watching this video at the age of 55? Well, my daughter is struggling with this concept as well. I wanted to revisit the topic and see if I could help her. I am glad I found you. Over the years that I have watched your videos, I think you are the most effective teacher I have ever seen. The concept of "chopping factor" is a miracle. Concept this simple, I don't know why the teachers can't really explain it clearly to their students. Could it be that they themselves are just repeating what they memorized, without any understanding?

@Math and Science This is really a great way to explain the Sin and Cos functions, excellent! However, I would suggest clearing one of the confusion that beginners might have got in their mind, when you say total force is 1 where 0.8 is going in one direction and 0.6 is going in the other direction, it may puzzle people, like you are saying you have got one dollar and out of it you are spending 80 cents on X item and 60 cents on Y item so how can you spend 140 cents out of 100 cents total.

AMAZING, Thank you!!. I have tried to tackle this area to give me a platform to go onto other things like Algebra and Calculus but always struggled and avoided Sin and Cosin as it seemed so abstract and a memory game. I would have been much further along over the years if I had seen this explanation the "what it actually is/does/used for. My brain just refuses to accept remembering stuff that it does not know the use for or aim of it/progression. Also, can I suggest you move to the transparent board to write on (where you are facing us) rather than having your back to us blocking the board (some other channels use it) as I find myself having to keep skipping back and breaking the flow of your lecture to see what was on the left side of your board that you are blocking.

I used cosine and tangent when I was building houses, to set out the framing for roof trusses, I wasn't interested in this at school, but when I became a builder , it came in very handy .

Me too. As a 16 year old I never understood why I was learning this. Now I measure the length of walls roofs windows in architactical drawings and than the software makes a report of energy loss for the co2 problem in this world, every new house must have a report like this now.

I really love this video...and all your videos. But One thing that confused me for a minute was why, if we were told to think about the sine and cosine as the percentages of the total force, those two numbers (.6 and .8) which make up the total force do not add up to 1. Thinking about it I realized that it is the square of those numbers that add up to the square of the total force. I wonder if students might be distracted by that or if they don’t notice.

Very nice video. For the calculations in similar triangles, you could have also mentioned the (possibly) first theorem in math (theorem-based math), the theorem of intersection, by Thales. Since the opposite sides are parallel (original, larger, smaller), the increase/decrease in their length is proportional to the analogous increase/decrease of the adjacent and the hypotenuse. Subscribed, keep up the good work!
