Paint It Black
Siobhan Magnus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens every day

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and must have it painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is black

Oh, ah

Overall Meaning

"Paint It Black" by Siobhan Magnus is a cover of The Rolling Stones' 1966 song of the same title. The lyrics of this song are about a man who is dealing with depression and is in a state of mind where he only wants to see everything painted black. The song begins with the singer seeing a red door and wanting it painted black, as he does not want to see any colors anymore. He feels like he is consumed by darkness and wants everything around him to match his mood. He sees the girls walking by in their summer clothes, but he has to turn his head until his darkness goes away.

The singer then sees a line of cars painted black, which reminds him of the loss of his love and the flowers that were placed on the grave. He feels like people are turning their heads and quickly looking away, just like a newborn baby, who is not used to the harsh realities of life. However, the singer is not happy with his situation and he looks inside himself and finds his heart to be black. He wants to have his red door painted black too, as it would help him fade away from reality and not face the facts of his life. The song ends with the singer singing "Oh, ah" as he accepts his situation and his dark world.

Beautiful song, beautiful singer, haunting scream, haunting melody, I love the whole thing. She did an amazing job with this song. She even got a standing ovation for this one.

@Serraph108

I love how she starts it out quiet and slowly builds in speed and volume all the way until she reaches that haunting scream of her's and then reigns it back in at the very end. She should have won American Idol that season.

@VioletFlameMusic
