Falling Down
Siouxsie and the Banshees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I would see you falling down
Still I would have been around
Hated to hear the sound
As you fell and punched the ground
Such as miserable suicide
Performed before my eyes
Staggering about the town
Unaware I was around

I wouldn't have you
If you wanted me to
I wouldn't have you
You wouldn't have you

Feel the dead sea
Running through your veins
A sea of mercury
Dragging you down the drain

I wouldn't have you
If you wanted me to
I wouldn't have you
You wouldn't have you

Come searching for your little girl
But she hid in her oyster shell
Stupoured and ill-humoured
You left her with the swine and swill
Didn't you?

I wouldn't have you
If you wanted me to

I wouldn't have you
You wouldn't have you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Falling Down" by Siouxsie and the Banshees express the singer's sadness, frustration, and impotence as she witnesses someone she cares about deteriorating and self-destructing. The opening lines set the scene of someone falling down, possibly due to an injury or drunkenness, while the singer laments that even though she would have been there to help, she couldn't do anything to prevent the fall. The use of the word "still" suggests that this is not the first time the person has fallen, and maybe the singer has tried to intervene but failed. The second verse hints at the cause of the person's suffering, as the singer describes a "miserable suicide" performed before her eyes. Whether this refers to an actual suicide attempt or a metaphorical one, it's clear that the singer is aware of the person's inner turmoil but feels powerless to alleviate it.

In the chorus, the singer repeats that she wouldn't have the person if they wanted her to, which can be interpreted in two ways. One is that the person is too troubled and unpredictable to be in a stable relationship with the singer. The other is that the singer refuses to enable the person's destructive behavior by being an enabler or a crutch. The dead sea and mercury imagery in the second half of the chorus suggest that the person is sinking further into despair and addiction, perhaps due to substance abuse. The final verse is a bitter accusation against the person, who is now searching for their "little girl" but has already abandoned and mistreated her. The line "you wouldn't have you" is a stark reminder that the person's self-hatred and self-destructiveness are their own doing, and that nobody can save them but themselves.
