Fear
Siouxsie and the Banshees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I get the feeling -- I'm not alone
I get the feeling -- it's someone I don't know

Do you ever have the strange sensation
When you're standing mighty tall
To jump from 17 floors and crash into freefall?
But then fear takes control -- fear of the unknown
Imagines two complete strangers
Who suspect they were meant to be
Both in need of love and affection
Yet their suspicions prevent something heavenly
Fear takes control -- fear of the unknown

Aware of what will hurt you
You're prepared to remain this way
So sad yet safe with your afflictions
Afraid to start a brand new day

We all get the strangest feeling
When we're standing mighty tall
To jump from 17 floors and crash into freefall

But then fear carries all -- fear of the unknown
Fear takes its toll -- fear of the unknown
Aware of what will hurt you
You're prepared to remain this way

So sad yet safe with your afflictions
Afraid to start a brand new day

Overall Meaning

The song "Fear" by Siouxsie and the Banshees speaks to an emotion that everyone experiences at one point or another - fear of the unknown. The opening lines of the song suggest a feeling of uneasiness, of being watched or accompanied by someone unknown, which immediately sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics.

The song goes on to describe the strange sensation of wanting to jump off a tall building, but ultimately not doing so because of fear. Fear is a powerful emotion, and it can prevent us from taking risks and experiencing new things in life. It is often our fear of the unknown that holds us back from trying new things and taking chances.

In the second half of the song, Siouxsie and the Banshees delve into how fear can prevent people from connecting and finding love. The lyrics suggest that two people may be attracted to each other but their fear and suspicion prevent them from acting on their feelings. This fear ultimately cuts them off from potential intimacy and happiness.

Du grand Siouxie ! 😃

De quand ça date ?
Je ne retrouve pas ce morceau.

Siouxie,
Une inventeresse avant les autres ! 😍

Une sorcière, une poétesse, une druidesse ! 🥰

Si je devais emporter un morceau de Siouxie sur une île déserte, ce serait Israel - non pour le nom et le message, mais pour la musique qui est pour moi la quintessence de Siouxie. ❤

I'll always prefer the early 80s post punk era of Siouxsie but the 90s really was an experimental time for her and the band they really branched out musically and I think they did it quite well this song and Kiss Them For Me are some of my favs

Estoy de acuerdo contigo, aquella época de los 80s sacaron discos maravillosos, estas remezclas con sonidos House y bailables es otra historia, aunque la original del álbum está bastante bien :)

I remember this remix and this video so well! I was shocked at the remix when it came out - so different than anything SATB had ever done. Truly, I was a bit horrified, I was very ant-dance and techno in the early '90s. This remix has grown on me though, and it's on my gym mix! The video - I love the cherub tie-in to Kiss Them For Me at the start. Siouxsie looks stunning, ravishing - and the same-sex kiss during the bridge?? That blew me away as a young gay man, still in the closet. So good to see this video again - I had neighbors with cable record it for me off MTV 120 Minutes - on a VHS tape!!!

I was also anti mainstream dance music...but probably for a very good reason.
The lazy copy catters of house music were starting to enter the scene.

No crap is crap.
People herd it for what it was.

Most of the post punk and Industrial bands by the very early 90s were also getting into dance music by 1990. And what they tried their hands at mostly aged decently well, because they weren't hiring or copying shitty mainstream DJ's or producers,,,like this remix

The video is excellent, pure 90's bliss! Remix version is nice too.

Siouxie's music takes you to a happy place, sure I remember listening to her on radio on John Peel then the earlier songs and TV interviews and songs like Happy House on the radio, then going to buy her records, the smell of vinyl and static record sleeves, dust the record with the velvet type pad,put on my Van Der Molen stereo make sure the speakers were 6ft apart for max effect, turn the base up and enjoy, with age I noticed more in each song be it words, instruments it's like rediscovering an old friend,I still see her as the Musician I saw at Albert Hall in 83,there are thoughts of NME,Melody Maker publications of the day where Siouxie featured and later seeing her play at the Town n Country around time of Kiss them for me, Forever in awe of her to this day, Big thanks to the uploader, family, friends, fellow fan's and Siouxie of course.

In my mind there's an alternative universe in which S&TB followed on this particular path and became an incredible 90s dance act
