The Snow
Sir Edward Elgar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O snow, which sinks so light,
Brown earth is hid from sight,
O soul, be thou as white,
As white as snow, as snow,
O snow, which falls so slow,
Dear earth quite warm below;
O heart,
O heart, so keep thy glow,
Beneath the snow, the snow.

O snow in thy soft grave
Sad flow'rs, sad flow'rs the winter brave;
O heart, so soothe and save,
so soothe, as does the snow.

The snow must melt, must go,
Fast, fast, fast, fast as water flow.

Not thus, my soul,
O sow
Thy gifts to fade like snow,
Not thus, not thus,
O sow not thus thy gifts to fade like snow.

O snow, thou'rt white no more,
Thy sparkling too, is o'er;
Be as bevore,
Was bright the snow.

Then as the snow all pure,
O heart be, but endure;

Through all the years full sure,
Not as the snow, not as the snow.

Overall Meaning

The song "The Snow," by Sir Edward Elgar is a romantic and poignant reflection on the profound symbolism of winter snow. In the first stanza, Elgar uses the snow to suggest the soul's purity, which should aim to be as white as snow. This idea is reinforced in the following lines, where the snow's slow fall is contrasted with the warm earth beneath, implying a sense of preservation of innocence or purity in the face of change and decay. The metaphor progresses to the heart, which is urged to maintain its glow beneath the snow and remain steadfast in the face of darkness, sadness, or hardships that may come.

In the second stanza, Elgar continues to describe the snow's impact on nature by personifying the sadness of the winter flowers that wilt under the blanket of snow. Yet, the heart is encouraged to soothe and save the sadness, as the snow does, and endure through the years, just as nature endures through the changing seasons. The final lines of the song call for the soul to sow its gifts in a way that they do not fade like the snow, which is ephemeral and temporary, but rather endures and lasts.

Overall, "The Snow" is an eloquent and inspiring meditation on the transience of nature and life, and the importance of preserving purity, goodness, and hope even in difficult times.

I performed this in college and loved this piece. It was originally written for a women's chorus and adapted by someone else for mixed chorus. I prefer the mixed chorus version. Great job.
