The band members bonded over a shared love of NZ music and a passion for making their own and formed after meeting at a Kora concert in 2006. Three members flatted together as Otago University students, spending countless hours in their "recording studio" (Eli Paewai's room) at 660 Castle St; hence the band name.
Six60's debut EP, released in 2008, features a track called "Someone to Be Around" that was left off their debut album but continues to be one of their most popular songs.
The band's self-titled debut album was released on 10 October 2011 on their own label Massive Entertainment. The album was produced and mixed by Tiki Taane and debuted at number one in the New Zealand charts and was certified gold within its first week of release. Their first two singles "Rise Up 2.0" and "Don't Forget Your Roots" reached number one and number two respectively on the RIANZ singles chart and were both certified double and triple platinum.
In 2018 the band won five Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards and were the most streamed artist by New Zealanders on Spotify. On 23 February 2019, Six60 became the first New Zealand band to play a sold-out concert at the Western Springs Stadium, to a crowd of 50,000 fans. On 24 April 2021, Six60 played the first concert at Auckland's Eden Park Stadium, to a crowd of 50,000 fans. It was the closing of the Six60 Saturdays country-wide tour and the largest concert of 2021.

We were just getting close
Painted the perfect scene
Right now, right here's all that we need
And when the sun goes down on us
That′s where I wanna be
And when the sun is coming up
(Stay here with me)
I never wanna leave
(Stay here with me)
I never wanna leave
Yeah, why are we counting time?
If it's just yours and mine
Standing tall beneath our feet
Right here, right now's all that we need
And when the sun goes down on us
That′s where I wanna be
And when the sun is coming up
I never want to leave
(Stay here with me)
I never wanna leave
(Stay here with me)
I never wanna leave
And when the sun goes down on us
That′s where I wanna be
And when the sun is coming up
I never wanna leave
(Stay here with me)
I never wanna leave
(Stay here with me)
I never wanna leave
The lyrics in Six60's song "Sundown" convey a desire to live in the moment and make the most of their time. The song begins with the singer asking their partner to slow down and enjoy the present instead of rushing to the future. The two are in a perfect moment, and the singer wants to prolong it as much as possible. The chorus emphasizes this desire, as the singer desires to stay in that moment when it feels like time stands still: "And when the sun goes down on us/ That′s where I wanna be/ And when the sun is coming up/ I never wanna leave."
The second verse continues with this theme, questioning the need to count time in a moment that feels so perfect. The singer wants to stand tall and enjoy the present, without worrying about the past or the future. The chorus repeats once again, emphasizing the desire to stay in the moment and never leave. The repeated "Stay here with me" also reinforces the desire for a deeper, more meaningful connection with the partner, more than just a fleeting moment in time.

@@yfa07 Yup the PR and media isn’t giving the hype kiwi music deserves. You see our mainstream radios (Edge, Hits, ZM) goes nuts over Grande’s and Beiber’s. Barely hype the kiwi music. Glad our sports events started promoting these guys a bit. Just they get Billboard tag. Benee did that earlier but that was due to tiktok. Just hope more kiwi artist gets a global appreciation
