Homeless
Six Feet Deep Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One nation under God, and in Him we trust,
well I'll believe it when I see it but I won't get my hopes up.
This melting pot of age, denomination, and race
has boiled over with prejudice, disgraced and shame faced.
Open your eyes people, things are gettin' sick.
Murder is legal, and the killers get rich.
Call this the land of the free and the home of the brave,
well I see people in chains and they're too blind to see that they're slaves.
I won't call this home.
Hate, it's the national pastime. Too late, it sung its song for the last time.
I'm building my stronghold on the Rock of Ages,
not on the sands of sin because I know its wages are death,
but God's love has given the breath of new life. So don't forget.
Watch TV and see the world's definition of love,
immorality glorified far above the importance of where man stands with God,
and I think its got to stop!
I won't call this home.
Every time I turn my head, this place, it's in my face. So blasphemous.
Screaming its obscenities, its abominations bleed my eyes. Disease.
These wicked flames, that flicker pain, try night and day to consume me.
The smell of death on everything I touch, cost of acceptance far too much.
But not for long, I'm going home, my savior's coming for me.
I've got to hold my head up high, try not to lose my focus.
I've got to stand my ground, while this world rips at my flesh.
But not for long, I'm going home, my savior's coming for me.
This nation we witness, the child of progress,
the land of opportunity, the land of success,
is just a caldron of souls that's about overfilled,
an empire the devil has worked so hard to build.
So for as long as I'm here, for the rest of my days,
I won't conform to this world, I won't adopt its ways.
Christ's kingdom is coming and without Him it's hopeless,
so until that day you can consider me homeless.

Overall Meaning

The song "Homeless" by Six Feet Deep is a reflection on the current state of American society. The lyrics criticize the idea of America being a nation under God and in Him we trust as hypocritical. In the first verse, the melting pot of age, denomination, and race has boiled over with prejudice, disgraced, and shame-faced. The singer urges people to open their eyes as things are getting sick; murder is legal, and the killers get rich while people are blinded by their chains. The song further criticizes the pastime of hate, which is too late to sing its last song.

The second part of the song talks about building a stronghold on the rock of ages, not on the sands of sin because the cost of acceptance is too high. The songwriter stresses the importance of standing your ground while the world rips at your flesh. The singer believes that America is a caldron of souls about overfilled, an empire the devil has worked so hard to build. So long as the songwriter is here, he won’t conform to this world, nor will he adopt its ways. Christ's kingdom is coming, and without him, it's hopeless, so until that day, you can consider him homeless.

Vince DiMaggio I still remember seeing all the bands like six feet deep at Cornerstone in the90's. I saw six feet deep live at Cornerstone twice, and once at another venue in northern Illinois. Epic times in hardcore/punk. Before metalcore turned to crap. The roots of it still sounded real. Six feet deep. Out of the same Cleveland hardcore scene that brought trailblazer Integrity. And Mushroomhead was back as early as 93. Both had a song on a comp on Dwid label Dark Empire. Very rough version of "angry son". The one on struggle was a tremendous improvement. Good times.
