When We Were Gods
Sixx:A.M. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

You and I in embryonic fluid
So entwined we could not let go
Cradled in your arms, reading poems of darkness
Fueled our love, it fueled our love
But I just want you to remember

When we were gods, when we were demons
We had it all, we had our reasons
We danced through the victories, we lived through the scars
I counted blessings while you counted stars
We had it all, yeah we had it all
When we were gods

Even now, covered in your ashes
Swollen tongue, bloodshot eyes
I am not defined by all of your disorders
I am good, and I will rise
But I just want you to remember

When we were gods, when we were demons
We had it all, we had our reasons
We danced through the victories, we lived through the scars
I counted blessings while you counted stars
We had it all, yeah we had it all
When we were gods
When we were gods

You though you could violate me when you wanted to
You though you could kill the part of me that haunted you
You though you could violate me when you wanted to
You though you could kill the part of me that haunted you

When we were gods, when we were demons
We had it all, we had our reasons
We danced through the victories, lived through the scars
I counted blessings while you counted stars
We had it all, yeah we had it all

Overall Meaning

"When We Were Gods" by Sixx:A.M. portrays a relationship that was once strong and passionate but has since deteriorated. The opening lines, "You and I in embryonic fluid, so entwined we could not let go," suggest that the couple was inseparable, deeply connected on a spiritual and emotional level. They found comfort in each other's embrace, engaging in shared experiences and exploring dark themes together through poetry.

The chorus emphasizes the intensity and significance of their past relationship. The line "When we were gods, when we were demons, we had it all, we had our reasons" captures the idea that they felt invincible, capable of anything. They navigated both victories and scars, celebrating their triumphs and enduring their hardships together. While one counted blessings, the other counted stars, highlighting the contrasting perspectives they had on life.

The second verse reveals the aftermath of the relationship, with the singer covered in the ashes of their past. The physical symptoms such as a swollen tongue and bloodshot eyes can be interpreted as metaphorical representations of the pain and emotional exhaustion they have endured. Despite this, the singer asserts their individuality, stating, "I am not defined by all of your disorders. I am good, and I will rise." It is a declaration of resilience and determination to overcome the hardships inflicted by the other person.

The bridge exposes the toxic dynamics that existed within the relationship. The lyrics express the belief that one person tried to violate and control the other at their own whim, and even attempted to destroy the part of them that haunted the other. It portrays a battle for power and control within the relationship, highlighting the damaging effects it had on both individuals.

Overall, "When We Were Gods" explores the rise and fall of a once powerful and passionate relationship. It acknowledges the memories and experiences they shared, both the highs and lows. The song also delves into the aftermath of such a relationship, highlighting the individual strength and determination to move forward and rise above the pain and toxicity.

This song is just awesome. James really kills it during the chorus. Dj's solo just sends chills through your body. Nikki's bass line is a powerful driving force. One of my favorite songs on the new record.

The more i listen to this album, the more i realize that i did not give them the attention they deserved. This album is much better than i began to assume.

what's wrong with Rise? My fave song of this album is Prayers for the damned, ironically the same title as the album but that lyric just speaks to me, if you know what I mean. I was probably the only one that was eager to get the album cause has been a sixx:a.m. fan in years even though I don't like all of their songs.

@800game

could have easily been on Heroin Diaries (IMO)
