Control
Skaggs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was a boy daddy was my guiding light
We'd take walks and talk about fishing girls and life
He'd help me with my homework cheer me up when I was down
Best friend that I ever had I miss havin' him around
He'd say do the very best you can with all that you've been blessed
And if the load's too great for you the Lord will do the rest
Keep one thing in mind if all else should fail
You can't control the wind but you can adjust the sail
Daddy lost his job when the factory closed
Times were hard bills to pay he was troubled and it showed
But he said son don't worry it's all to no avail
We can't control the wind but we can adjust the sail
I think of his advice when life turns its back on me
There is no mountain I can't climb if I start down on my knees
I'll do the very best I can with all that I've been blessed
And if the load's too great for me the Lord will do the rest
I'll keep one thing in mind if all else should fail

I can't control the wind but I can adjust the sail
No I can't control the wind but I can adjust the sail

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Skaggs's song Control are about the importance of perspective in life. The singer looks back on the advice his father gave him when he was younger and uses it to guide him through tough times. The singer's father tells him that he can't control everything that happens in life, but he can control how he reacts to it. He encourages him to do the best with what he's been given and to have faith that things will work out in the end.

The first verse sets up the relationship between the singer and his father as one of closeness and support. They bond over shared interests and experiences, and his father is a source of comfort when he's feeling down. The second verse shows the father going through a difficult time, losing his job and struggling to pay bills. However, he maintains a positive attitude and reminds his son that they can still make the best of the situation by adjusting their plans and expectations.

The chorus repeats the mantra that the singer's father instilled in him: "You can't control the wind but you can adjust the sail". This message is meant to be inspirational and motivational, reminding him that while he may encounter obstacles in life, he can overcome them by being adaptable and resilient. The final verse shows the singer applying this lesson to his own life, using his faith and determination to overcome any challenges that come his way.

Overall, Skaggs's song Control is a reminder that while we may not have complete control over our circumstances, we can still choose how we respond to them. By adjusting our attitudes and expectations, we can find a way to persevere and thrive despite the challenges we face.

I can relate to this song some. My father was a better man and father than I was forced to believe he was. He always wanted me to do my best and do right. Dad passed away November 20, 1999, and the pain of him hits like a truck. Still pains me to this day. Looking back, he was actually a good father. I only wish my mother could've been half the parental figure he tried to be.
