Sketch & Code Featuring Kim Nile Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a clear day in the city
Do you remember the city?
I never kissed your cheek or told you how I felt
And I remember feeling your pain because I shared the blame
Not knowing what to do. It's too late for me too
We need evolution not revolution to be free
For you and me
Searching for a solution to this devolution
Relentlessly, destroying me
Remember the paths we took
How they crossed they misunderstood
Letting go now of denial its time that we reconcile
Rising up and climbing hills
Running warm now through the fields

All the things that we chose
How my heart it stopped it froze

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Sketch & Code Featuring Kim Nile's song Evolution describe a clear day in the city, and ask if the listener remembers the city. The singer then confesses to never having kissed the subject of the song's cheek, or having expressed their feelings for them. The next line reveals that the singer had shared in their pain, and feels that they are also to blame for the situation. The singer laments, "Not knowing what to do. It's too late for me too". In the chorus, the singer calls for evolution (not revolution) to achieve freedom for both of them. Continuing, the lyrics describe their search for a solution to a "devolution" that is "relentlessly, destroying me".

The second verse speaks to the paths they took and how they misunderstood each other at the time. The singer wants to let go of their denial and reconcile with the subject of the song. The lyrics continue with a description of the two of them rising up and climbing hills, running warm through fields. The final line, "all the things that we chose, how my heart it stopped it froze", suggests a certain amount of regret for decisions they made, and perhaps a wish for a different outcome.

Overall, the song is about missed opportunities and the desire for meaningful connection. The singer regrets not expressing their feelings and having to confront the pain they have caused. However, they remain hopeful that through evolution and reconciliation, they can find a solution to the problems they face.

This should have millions of views. I can't believe how hard it was to track this down back in the day and indeed find it now! Absolute spine-tingling masterpiece.

I can only imagine this'll be used on a Netflix original and blow up one day. Shouts to everyone who heard it first time round, then!

I used to double drop Twisted Individual's Swan Cake at 3:39 (you can tease its instruments for any amount of time before this). Seriously, try it, your brain will release a depression-beating amount of dopamine/endorphins. Fuck me, I miss these days. The early to late 2000s was a brilliant time for DnB of every variety. It seemed every time you blinked there was something worth grabbing.
