The Threat
Skid Row Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been convicted with and without reason
Tarred and feathered like a piper on a killing spree
And felt the anger of generations
And been a target for a cheap shots of authority

So you think you cut me down to size
Well there's something you should realize
It's gonna take more than a break in the law
To make me smile pretty for the wreckin' ball

Won't beg, won't bleed
The end of sacrifice is a threat to society
Hard line, you'll see
Once you've made a mark, you've made a threat to society

I wasn't put there to be treated
Like some disease you hoped would go away if left alone
You can sweep me under the carpet
But, I'll still infect your need to use me as a steppin' stone

So you think you cut me down to size
Well there's something you should realize
It's gonna take more than a break in the law
To make me smile pretty for the wreckin' ball

Won't beg, won't bleed
The end of sacrifice is a threat to society
Hard line, you'll see
Once you've made a mark, you've made a threat to society
Look out
So you think you cut me down to size
Well there's something you should realize
It's gonna take more than a break in the law
To make me smile pretty for the wreckin' ball

Won't beg, won't bleed
The end of sacrifice is a threat to society
Hard line, you'll see
Once you've made a mark, you've made a threat to society

Won't beg, won't bleed
The end of sacrifice is a threat, threat

Hard line, you'll see
Once you've made a mark, you've made a threat to society

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Skid Row's "The Threat" convey a sense of defiance against the societal norms that seek to oppress those who do not conform. The singer has been treated poorly, "convicted with and without reason," "tarred and feathered," and "a target for cheap shots of authority." Despite this mistreatment, they refuse to be brought down, stating that it will take more than a mere "break in the law" to break their spirit. They emphasize that they will not "beg" or "bleed" and that their "end of sacrifice is a threat to society." By acknowledging their power as a threat to society, they reject the notion that they are lesser, and instead, hold their ground against a system that seeks to weed out those who don't fit the mold.

The lyrics also touch upon the idea that those who have been stigmatized do not necessarily wish to be treated as such. They assert that they "weren't put there to be treated like some disease" and despite efforts to bury these issues, it cannot change their ingrained presence within society. The singer recognizes that individuals such as themselves are used as "stepping stones" for others to climb upon, but they will not be erased so quickly. In the end, the repeated line "once you've made a mark, you've made a threat to society" serves as a warning to those who would dismiss or oppress those who do not conform.

Overall, "The Threat" is a song about rebellion against societal norms and the ways in which individuals can become a threat to the status quo merely by existing. It is an anthem for those who have been rejected, cast aside, or misunderstood by society, emphasizing the power that lies within individuals despite oppressive forces.

This by far my favorite Skid Row song ever. My friends and I met all the Skid Row guys when they were recording this album in Ft Lauderdale in February/March 1991. We then saw them on this tour for two consecutive nights at the long-gone Sunrise Musical Theater in January 1992. Pantera opened, and they were about to release Vulgar Display of Power. Great shows, great times. HOW could that have been almost THIRTY years ago?
