Getting Away With It
Skin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been walking in the rain
Just to get wet on purpose
I've forcing myself
Not to forget that I feel worse

I've been getting away with it
All my life
Getting away with it
All my life

However I look it's clear to see
I love you more than
You love me

I hate that mirror
It makes me feel so worthless
I'm an original sinner
But when I'm with you
I couldn't care less

I've been getting away with it
All my life

Getting away with it
All my life

Overall Meaning

"Getting Away With It" is an introspective song by Skin, the lead singer of Skunk Anansie. The first verse is all about experiencing pain, and yet continuing to do the same thing over and over again, just because you can. The line "I've been walking in the rain just to get wet on purpose" is a metaphor for seeking out pain and hurt. It suggests that the singer is inflicting emotional pain on themselves, and that they do it knowingly, almost as a form of punishment.

In the chorus, Skin sings "I've been getting away with it all my life," which is the song's central theme. The idea here is that the singer has always found ways to avoid dealing with their problems by either ignoring them, suppressing them, or denying that they exist. By implicitly drawing attention to this coping mechanism, the song reveals the character's vulnerability and inner turmoil. In the second verse, Skin explores her feelings of insecurity and self-doubt. She hates "that mirror" because it reflects her flaws and makes her feel "so worthless." By admitting her struggles to herself and others, the character begins to take accountability for her actions and feelings.

The final line of the second verse, "But when I'm with you, I couldn't care less," is a testament to the power of love. Even with all of her flaws and insecurities, Skin has found someone who makes her feel complete, someone for whom she would drop all pretenses and just be herself.
