The band initially came together with three of the four Dub War veterans with Jeff Rose and Martin Ford returning alongside Webbe, along with new bassist Daniel Pugsley. The group released their debut LP Babylon in July 2002, with sporadic success in parts of Europe and the U.S. metal underground. However after suffering years of indifference and waning support from Earache Records with Dub War and now seeing the same lack of label support from RCA for Skindred, Rose and Ford amicably left the band in November of 2002, but would continue to offer their support.
Soon Webbe had hooked up with guitarist Mikey Dee, and drummer Dirty Arya and continued on, but it wasn't until a year or so later and Lava Records' involvement that the album really took off. Skindred re-released Babylon in August 2004. Lava's version featured different cover art, and included newly recorded material in addition to the original, Howard Benson-helmed songs. Skindred then headed out on a series of tours with acts like Sevendust, Nonpoint, and Papa Roach, and never looked back.

So much blood spilt pon de dance floor
Just like Oliver Twist you know you're begging for more
Raw to the maximum broke down the law
Sweat and claret increase ya for sure
Ah we no want no badness bout ya
Let me see you bouncing in the area
Call the police we come to murder
And so the music flows everybody knows
Musical murder in the room tonight
You know we're bouncing everyone hold tight
We keep you moving from the wrong to right
Roots rock riot
Musical murder in the room tonight
You know we're bouncing everyone hold tight
Just keep you moving from the wrong to right
Roots rock riot, roots rock riot roots rock
Co me say so many people dem ah rock in the place
Can't find no room you know you can't find space
The energy's ecstatic as you're smashing up the place
You'll fall down if you can't take the pace
And so the music flows everybody knows
Musical murder in the room tonight
You know we're bouncing everyone hold tight
We keep you moving from the wrong to right
Roots rock riot
Musical murder in the room tonight
You know we're bouncing everyone hold tight
Just keep you moving from the wrong to right
Roots rock riot, roots rock riot roots rock
This is a murder murder musical ma ma ma murder murder
Pushing it fa fa fa further further pushing it! Now hear this
Roots rock riot!
The equalizer and the compression
Turn up the bass it's time for confession
No bodder with the fuckery pay your concession
If you get ejected there's no readmission
Feel the injection slaughtered compression musician
We took it right down real low then just lets let it go
Roots rock riot!
This is murder murder musical ma ma ma murder murder
Pushing it fa fa fa further further pushing it! Now hear this
Musical murder in the room tonight
You know we're bouncing everyone hold tight
Just keep you moving from the wrong to right
Roots rock riot, just keep on moving to the roots rock riot.
The Skindred song "Roots Rock Riot" is a high-energy track that encourages movement and dancing, with a clear fusion of rock, reggae, and punk influences. The lyrics describe a packed dance floor with an explosive atmosphere that is reminiscent of a riot. The verses allude to the violent nature of moshing, with references to blood and sweating, but also encourage the crowd to keep bouncing and to avoid any "badness." The chorus repeats the phrase "roots rock riot," as a call-to-action for the crowd to keep the energy up and to move with the music. The song ends with a powerful bass drop, and a final call of "murder murder musical," which further emphasizes the aggressive but passionate emotions that are present in the song.
One interesting fact about the song is that it was the title track for Skindred's second album, which reached #7 on Billboard's Top Reggae Albums chart. It was also the band's highest-charting album on the UK Albums Chart, reaching #35 in 2007. Another notable feature of the song is its unique sound, which blends heavy metal with elements of dancehall, ska, and hip-hop. The song's music video, which features the band performing in front of a large crowd and highlights the intense energy of their live shows, has received over 3 million views on YouTube. Finally, the song was covered by the American metalcore band Motionless in White in 2019, showcasing its enduring appeal and popularity.
