The band initially came together with three of the four Dub War veterans with Jeff Rose and Martin Ford returning alongside Webbe, along with new bassist Daniel Pugsley. The group released their debut LP Babylon in July 2002, with sporadic success in parts of Europe and the U.S. metal underground. However after suffering years of indifference and waning support from Earache Records with Dub War and now seeing the same lack of label support from RCA for Skindred, Rose and Ford amicably left the band in November of 2002, but would continue to offer their support.
Soon Webbe had hooked up with guitarist Mikey Dee, and drummer Dirty Arya and continued on, but it wasn't until a year or so later and Lava Records' involvement that the album really took off. Skindred re-released Babylon in August 2004. Lava's version featured different cover art, and included newly recorded material in addition to the original, Howard Benson-helmed songs. Skindred then headed out on a series of tours with acts like Sevendust, Nonpoint, and Papa Roach, and never looked back.

And the way you play your tunes I know you're musically tough
I catch your vibe and the way you carry on
And you feel say you wicked as you rock the session
Pull it back now one time dreadlocks
Become me no you want the original
Play the B-side this instrumental
Selector, pull the tune again me brethren
Selector, pull it back again
Selector, we don't come again now man
Selector, play the tune again
Selector, selector
You got to pull it up, got to pull it up
Selector, selector
I like to pick it up, you gotta put it up
Move to the decks and try to take up the mike
And show the people in the place you've got the skills to excite
You get blanked like your not even there
Even though in all them face you just constantly stare
Jack it again I want to ride the rhythm
I want to rock the rhythm
Now pull it up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up
Murder the tune now with a subsonic boom
That's how we rock out the room
Now pull it up, up
Pull it up one time, selector
Boom
The lyrics of Skindred's song "Selector" speak to the experience of attending a dancehall party and the crucial role that the selector plays in creating a great vibe. The singer notes that the selector is "ruff" and "musically tough," and praises their ability to "rock the session." The chorus emphasizes the importance of the selector continuing to play great tunes and "pull it up" when necessary to keep the party going.
The lyrics also touch on the frustration that can come with trying to impress the crowd as an MC, with the singer describing being "blanked like [he's] not even there." Despite this, the focus remains on the selector and their ability to keep the party going with great tunes and a killer rhythm.
