I should first apologize for taking so long to sit down and watch this, as it may well be the best episode you've posted yet, and I say this as someone who literally hasn't touched the series since Gen 1; it truly encompasses everything that keeps me coming back to this channel. A handful of additional thoughts:

- Back in school there were three of us that played first-gen Pokemon; I was the only one with the Red version, so my Growlithes and Scythers were always in demand. Of course I also had to pay an even MORE ridiculous price for Porygon.

- Bug types were even more useless against Psychic opponents back then because so many of them were also Poison type, which was weak against...well, you know.

- I'll have you know that I have obtained not only all 151 original Pokemon (yes, 151; my friends and I attended a convention where Mew was being given out, got him completely legit. I sold the cart some time back, but still have the paper certificate of authenticity laying around) but ALSO a Fine Arts degree, and had thus already wasted my life to the maximum possible extent by my mid-20's.

- Even if the rest of the video wasn't as great as it is, Freedom the Jigglypuff would have been enough all on his own to make this an instant favorite.

Again, wonderful stuff, very much worth the time investment to take it all in. Keep up the excellent work, always looking forward to whatever you've got coming next, and hoping the new year has treated you well so far.

God, I love videos like this one. Analysis and funny humor jokes and all that stuff is great, but there's something about 'I love this (game/movie/whatever) deeply, let me tell you my story'. Glad to see some more uploads from you, Skelly!

Very well put. I still have my red cartridge from way back when, too. I don't even have a way to play it any more, but I'll be damned if I ever get rid of something that was such an important part of my childhood.

I haven't played any of the versions past gold, but I'll never forget how tightly Pokemon gripped me as a kid.

I would love to say that I have this same feeling for Emerald, but... I actually have this sort of nostalgia for one of the earlier versions of Pokemon Clover. Y'know, the 4chan shitpost romhack that /vp/ made. Despite being a joke romhack I find that it's overall better put together in every way than many serious romhacks (not to mention recent mainline games).

Can't say I ever heard of that one. The only rom hacks I dabbled in were Touhoumon and a bit of Moemon. Will have to look up Clover sometime.

I fail to understand how a video this entertaining, heartfelt, and well put together scores under a thousand views. Seriously, you took maybe the most widely-dissected game of all time shy of the original Super Mario Bros. and managed to put a fresh spin on it. It was so well made, enjoyed the sentiments and your story throughout, mixed with good, natural humour thay didn't overstay its welcome but gave your video another dimension.
I grew up on Red & Yellow and share much of the meaningful feelings and moments you express here, and yet some of it I forgot and you took me back to those wonderful, childhood times.

First of all: Holy fuck, your video production has always been top tier for a channel this small, but you really outdid yourself this time. Absolute madlad, I really hope the Algorithm blesses this video eventually

Anyway: I also share a lot of the same feelings towards Blue. I think that the impact and wonder if the original games has kind of been forgotten about due to all the sequels. But like...the surprise of your Pokemon evolving, the existence of the evil team, being able to Surf on water...that shit was creative and memorable. Even if the sequels are "better" games, they fundamentally can't share that same sense of surprise and wonder, since they iterate on that foundation

Agreed. Gold and Silver have always been objectively better games to me (I don't understand how anybody could take issue with them), but Blue and Red appeal was just magical right out the gate.

This was excellent, Pokemon blue is one of my favourite games of all time, I don't need any other pokemon games (apart from pokemon stadium obvs) other than this. I don't want extra pokemon, extra mechanics. I want there to be a bug where I can get infinite items, I want to be able to use that to get mew. The combination of this with pokemon stadium (where they tightened a lot of the battle mechanics) made this next level, it added additional ways you needed to optimize your team for the different cups and set a good level of challenge. Upping the graphics and seeing your pokemon in 3D was so cool too. Happy memories and I give this a play through every few years or so

It was the red cartridge of Pokémon Red in a red Gameboy Pocket for me, but apart from that, you just made me relive my youth for 50 minutes straight. I started following you for the shmup content, but I did not expect this glorious trip down memory lane. Thanks for the all the beautiful videos, love your work!
