Weep
Skunk Anansie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I called you brazen
Called you whore right to your face
And watched you silently
And publicly disgraced
I didn't notice
When you strengthened like a vice
That you were trembling
And burned beneath the ice

[Chorus: x2]
Why don't you weep
When I hurt you?
Why don't you weep
When I cut you?
You don't bleed
And the anger builds up inside

You said a prayer
And I betrayed you with a kiss
I never realized that all
Had come to this
So keep your dignity
Don't throw it all to waste
Stronger feelings
Than you've ever learned to face

[Repeat Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Skunk Anansie's song Brazen depict a relationship filled with betrayal, anger, and shame. The singer calls their partner brazen and a whore to their face, publicly disgracing them. However, as the song progresses, the singer realizes that their partner has been silently enduring the abuse and has become stronger, even though they are burning beneath the ice. The chorus questions why their partner doesn't weep or bleed when hurt, and the anger inside the singer builds up.

The second verse describes the betrayal of the partner with a kiss after they had said a prayer. The singer seems to regret their actions and acknowledges that they never realized that everything has come to this. They urge their partner to keep their dignity and not waste it but to face the stronger feelings that they have learned to endure.

Overall, the song is about a toxic relationship, where both partners are hurting each other, and both are enduring pain. The singer realizes that their partner is much stronger and has learned to endure feelings stronger than they could ever face.

I worked on this video, as assistant to the director. I’m at 1:24 and various other points throughout. It was a long shoot and a lot of fun. We finished about six the next morning after an early start the previous day. No sleep for well over 24 hours.I got on well with all the band and was on call to assist them in their performances. Really lovely bunch of people. That red paint took days to get off though. I went shortly after with the director to watch them play at the Brixton Academy. I had a beaming smile when Skin saw me at the bar in the afterparty and shouting “Leon!” ran across the room and gave me a hug. Great song, great band and great memories.

@MatthewXLY

I'd personally not even put the 'female' qualifier in there. Straight awesome.

@johnberkley1721

Probably the most underrated band of the 90s , and there were plenty
