Flowers of the field
Sky Sailing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The darkness
The cold mines knew it best
When the daylight headed west
And disappeared

Progression
On the morning goes
But regardless no one knows
The day has cleared
Oh we are blind

I’ll be the flowers of the field
That slowly bloom
While you are slowly sleeping on the ground
And I’ll be your escort in a sad waltz
Around the room
I’ll twirl you all around
Without a sound

The snowfall
The Great Lakes know it best
When the summers travel west
And disappear

Like dry ice
The snowcaps on the hills
Melt like 50 dollar bills of our new year
Oh we are cold

I’ll be the flowers of the field
That slowly bloom
While you are slowly sleeping on the ground
And I’ll be your escort in a sad waltz
Around the room
I’ll twirl you all around
Without a sound

Weβ€˜re trying hard
To alleviate
This dizzy feeling
And We’re skipping meals
Because it feels that bad

If we survive, we’ll stay alive
below the ceiling

Of new atmospheres and brighter years
That we’ll have

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sky Sailing’s song β€œFlowers of the Field” are emotive and poetic with a sorrowful sentiment running through them. The song appears to be about the impermanence of life, the passing of time, and the inevitability of death. The dark and cold mines and the Great Lakes symbolize the infinite depth and vastness of time and nature, while the flowers symbolize beauty and the fleetingness of life. The darkness and coldness of the mines and the Great Lakes are juxtaposed with the delicate beauty of the flowers that slowly bloom. The line β€œwe are blind” suggests the human inability to comprehend the vastness and profundity of nature’s mysteries. The snowfall and the melting of the snowcaps on the hills remind us of the cyclical passage of time, ushering in a new year, and the fact that everything eventually fades away.

The song also speaks to the power of love and the human connection that transcends death. The singer promises to be like the flowers, blooming even as his loved one sleeps in the ground. The line β€œI’ll be your escort in a sad waltz around the room, I’ll twirl you all around without a sound” suggests the singer’s desire to dance with his loved one, even in death, and shows his love and devotion to her. Lastly, the song speaks to the resilience of the human spirit and our ability to survive and thrive even in the face of adversity. The line β€œif we survive, we’ll stay alive, below the ceiling of new atmospheres and brighter years that we’ll have” speaks to our ability to overcome personal challenges and achieve greater heights.

It's 2019, I am 23 years old and this song still gives me all the feelings it did like 8 years ago. I just wish I didn't have to go on youtube every time I want to hear it.

Well it’s always been on Apple Music, but I know it’s not free. Really don’t know why this song was never on Spotify though, it’s a shame really as it could have gotten a lot more recognition, and deservedly so as it’s a masterpiece!

Has anyone realized how really dark and depressing this album is? Either way, Adam Young made turned those feelings into something beautiful, and that's really hard to do.

That Guy.

He's a true artist. Hard to take the pain and turn that into positivity. The emotion is beautiful I agree.

I've realized. Adam Young was in a dark place when he wrote this album. The longing in his voice and lyrics is heartbreaking. It's sad, but interesting how an artist's best work is usually done when they're in those dark places.
