Tower
Skylar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're high upon the tower
Now don't look down
I will be okay here on the ground
And you can always call
To say hello from time to time
When you're no longer mine

I will be drunk on cheap beer
Like everyone else around here
You've got the world at your feet
There's nothing out there for me

You don't have to lie
Saying that you'll try
To make it work from a distance
Just leave me here to die
As I watch you climb
Up to the top of your ambitions

You're high upon the tower
Now don't look down
I will be okay here on the ground
And you can always call
To say hello from time to time
When you're no longer mine

Here in a pale shaded light
Under the trailer park lights
There'll be nothing left for you to see
You won't even recognize me

You don't have to lie
Saying that you'll try
To make it work from a distance
Just leave me here to die
As I watch you climb
Up to the top of your ambitions

You're high upon the tower
Now don't look down
I will be okay here on the ground
And you can always call
To say hello from time to time
When you're no longer mine

I always knew (I always knew) that you would follow your big dreams
What I didn't know (I didn't know) is that your dreams never did include me

You're high upon the tower
Now don't look down
I will be okay here on the ground
And you can always call

To say hello from time to time
When you're no longer mine

Overall Meaning

In Skylar Grey's song "Tower," the singer is telling their significant other not to worry about them as they pursue their dreams and ambitions. They use the image of the other person being "high upon the tower" to represent their elevated position in life, while the singer is content to remain on the ground with cheap beer and trailer park lights. The singer knows that the other person's dreams and ambitions do not include them and that they will eventually move on, but reassures them that they will be okay and can always reach out from time to time.

The lyrics are a poignant reflection on the impact of pursuing one's dreams on a relationship. While the other person achieves success and climbs higher, the singer is left behind, accepting their place and coming to terms with the fact that their paths may no longer run parallel. The lyrics are also a commentary on the sometimes-unavoidable distance that can come between two people as they pursue their own individual goals.

Interestingly, the song features a sample of a phone call between Eminem and a fan who attempted suicide but survived. The fan's words to Eminem about his music having saved her life and given her hope are included in the outro of the song.

Excellent video! I did not even know about the Skylon Tower. I have never been to Niagara Falls and it is on my bucket list. I now want to go the Skylon Tower when I get there. Thanks for sharing!

My wife and I had New Year's Eve dinner at the revolving restaurant up there... it was - 40 that night. Loved the fireworks from there though, I'm really liking your videos, especially my city, Toronto.

It's pretty cool to see but they badly need to renovate the ground floor. I was just there with my wife this past May and it looked exactly the same as it did when I first visited Niagara falls as an 11 year old boy with my grandparents.
