As a child, Grey performed professionally with her mother in a folk duo called Generations. In 2003, Grey moved to Los Angeles and recorded a demo under the alias Holly Brook, which would be her stage name for several years. In 2004 she signed a publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group and a recording contract with American rock band Linkin Park’s Warner Bros. Records’ label imprint, Machine Shop Recordings. She would later release her debut album, Like Blood Like Honey, under the labels in 2006.
In 2010, after moving to Oregon, she co-wrote Eminem and Rihanna's No.1 hit single "Love the Way You Lie" alongside British record producer Alex da Kid, who subsequently signed her to his label imprint, KIDinaKORNER. Her work with Eminem on Love the Way You Lie was the first of many collaborations between the two.
Grey's second album and first under the pseudonym Skylar Grey, Don't Look Down, was released in July 2013. Her third album, Natural Causes, was released in September 2016. In 2019, Grey announced that she had left Interscope Records, and released an EP, Angel With Tattoos, in October of the same year. She released her fourth album, the eponymous Skylar Grey, in April of 2022. In 2023, she announced her intention to re-record her hit songs after selling her music catalogue two years prior to be able to afford to settle a divorce suit.
Grey is perhaps best known as a guest vocalist on several hit singles, including Fort Minor's "Where'd You Go", P. Diddy's "Coming Home", Dr. Dre's "I Need a Doctor", Macklemore's "Glorious", and more. She has also written for number of other prominent artists, including but not limited to Kehlani, Pink, Nicki Minaj, Céline Dion, and Beyoncé. Her music has featured in multiple films, including Suicide Squad, The Fate of the Furious, Aquaman, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Over her career Grey has accumulated five Grammy nominations, including nominations in the categories of Song of the Year and Album of the Year.
Cannonball
Skylar Grey Lyrics

Because my will is stronger than a gale force wind
Look out, look out, 'cause each time I fall
I'll be crashing down, right through your arms
Here I come
Cannonball, cannonball
Cannonball, cannonball, cannonball
And when they light their torches, when they scream and yell
I'm gonna raise my flag and gonna give 'em hell
Look out, look out, 'cause each time I fall
I'll be crashing down, right through your arms
Here I come
Cannonball, cannonball
Here I come
Cannonball, cannonball, cannonball
At the end of the day
When the air is still and the sky is grey
Let's swim
Who will be standing?
I challenge you all
Bombs away, bombs away
Here I come
Cannonball, cannonball
Here I come
Cannonball, cannonball
Here I come
Cannonball, cannonball
Here I come
Cannonball, cannonball, cannonball
The lyrics to Skylar Grey's song, "Cannonball," are empowering and inspirational. The chorus, "Here I come, Cannonball, Cannonball," represents the idea of diving in with full force, without holding back or hesitating. Grey uses swimming as a metaphor for life, suggesting that no matter how hard people try to push her down, she will continue to rise up and overcome every obstacle that comes her way.
The first verse sets the tone for the entire song, expressing Grey's inner strength and determination. She defies those who try to hold her back, stating that her will is stronger than any external force, and she will always find a way to keep moving forward despite the challenges she faces. The second verse shows that Grey is unafraid to stand up for herself and fight back against those who try to bring her down. She declares that she will raise her flag and give them hell, no matter the consequences.
The bridge provides a moment of reflection and contemplation, acknowledging that, at the end of the day, everyone is equal, and it is up to each individual to determine their own destiny. The chorus is repeated once more, driving home the message that Grey is a force to be reckoned with, and no one can stop her from achieving her goals.
Overall, "Cannonball" is an anthem for anyone who has ever felt oppressed, underestimated, or held back. It encourages listeners to dive in headfirst and overcome any obstacle that may come their way.

Skylar is just a inspiring person; she never fails to make my day so much more better. I can't wait to hear more from her. Where'd you go will always be an amazing song from her; even if it was a featured song. It still lays in my heart (The only song I remember listening to when I was younger).

Both Skylar and the X Ambassadors are amazing and sadly underrated. They should be given more credit.

My dad has stage four prostate cancer, he's honestly the best dad a person could have. For his 76th birthday I took him ziplining. They told us if we wanted to go faster to yell, "Cannonball". He did on every line. Now I'm in tears.❤
