As a child, Grey performed professionally with her mother in a folk duo called Generations. In 2003, Grey moved to Los Angeles and recorded a demo under the alias Holly Brook, which would be her stage name for several years. In 2004 she signed a publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group and a recording contract with American rock band Linkin Park’s Warner Bros. Records’ label imprint, Machine Shop Recordings. She would later release her debut album, Like Blood Like Honey, under the labels in 2006.
In 2010, after moving to Oregon, she co-wrote Eminem and Rihanna's No.1 hit single "Love the Way You Lie" alongside British record producer Alex da Kid, who subsequently signed her to his label imprint, KIDinaKORNER. Her work with Eminem on Love the Way You Lie was the first of many collaborations between the two.
Grey's second album and first under the pseudonym Skylar Grey, Don't Look Down, was released in July 2013. Her third album, Natural Causes, was released in September 2016. In 2019, Grey announced that she had left Interscope Records, and released an EP, Angel With Tattoos, in October of the same year. She released her fourth album, the eponymous Skylar Grey, in April of 2022. In 2023, she announced her intention to re-record her hit songs after selling her music catalogue two years prior to be able to afford to settle a divorce suit.
Grey is perhaps best known as a guest vocalist on several hit singles, including Fort Minor's "Where'd You Go", P. Diddy's "Coming Home", Dr. Dre's "I Need a Doctor", Macklemore's "Glorious", and more. She has also written for number of other prominent artists, including but not limited to Kehlani, Pink, Nicki Minaj, Céline Dion, and Beyoncé. Her music has featured in multiple films, including Suicide Squad, The Fate of the Furious, Aquaman, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Over her career Grey has accumulated five Grammy nominations, including nominations in the categories of Song of the Year and Album of the Year.

Something quite like this
It comes to hit you when you
Are least expectin’ it
So now what happens if I choose
To have this child, have a child with you?
Do you believe that we can make it through?
How we gonna do it? Shit, man!
We don’t even got no ring
And we don’t got the money, shit, man!
We’re gonna need a bigger house
We’ve got a lot to figure out
How we gonna do this thing?
How we gonna do this thing? Shit, man!
Sometimes it still feels like
We’re just a couple of kids
Afraid of growin’ up, yeah,
Afraid to say ‘this is it’
So now I don’t know what I’ll do
But I’m so in love so in love with you
Can you believe this is happening so soon?
How we gonna do this thing?
How we gonna do it? Shit, man!
We don’t even got no ring
And we don’t got the money, shit, man!
We’re gonna need a bigger house
We’ve got a lot to figure out
How we gonna do this thing?
How we gonna do this thing? Shit, man!
This ain’t what I expected,
Ain’t happenin’ like I thought it,
And if they say, “love is free,”
Then tell me why the fuck its costin’
And yes, it happens often and I should cope with my losses
And you say you’re not ready
I don’t believe in abortions
My heart, light as a feather
I know things can get better
I know your vision’s cloudy
So much inclement weather
I know that faith is a string that’s slowly coming untethered,
But we can get through anything together
How we gonna do this thing?
How we gonna do it? Shit, man!
We don’t even got no ring
And we don’t got the money, shit, man!
We’re gonna need a bigger house
We’ve got a lot to figure out
How we gonna do this thing?
How we gonna do this thing? Shit, man!
The lyrics to Skylar Grey's song "Shit Man!" explore the fears and apprehensions that come with unexpected pregnancy. The song is sung from the perspective of a woman who is pregnant and grappling with the decision to have a child with someone she loves, even though they are not financially or socially prepared. The singer expresses her love for her partner but also voices hesitation and uncertainty about their ability to handle the responsibilities that come with parenthood.
The repeated refrain of "How we gonna do this thing?" highlights the overwhelming feeling of the situation and the couple's lack of preparedness. The use of expletives in the chorus emphasizes the raw emotion and frustration that the singer is feeling. The line "And yes, it happens often and I should/cope with my losses" reveals the societal pressure placed on women to deal with an unexpected pregnancy as a loss, rather than a potential new beginning.
The song ultimately conveys the importance of love, faith, and partnership in navigating difficult situations. The singer acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead but expresses a willingness to face them with her partner by her side.
