How Does It Feel
Slade Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How does it feel runnin' around, 'round, 'round?
How does it feel watching from upside down?
'Cause many years from now there will be new sensations
And new temptations
How does it feel?

How does it feel right at the start?
And how does it feel when you are thrown apart?
'Cause many years from now there will be new elations
And new frustrations
How does it feel? Oh, oh

Do you know, know, know what it's like
To be searchin' in your own time?
All your attempting, experimenting, all on the climb
Do you know, know, know what it's like
To be searching and suddenly find
All your illusion, all your confusion, all left behind?

How does it feel turnin' away?
And how does it feel facing another day?
'Cause many years from now there will be newer poisons
And new horizons
How does it feel? Oh, oh, oh

Do you know, know, know what it's like
To be searchin' in your own time?
All your attempting, experimenting, all on the climb
Do you know, know, know what it's like
To be searching and suddenly find
All your illusion, all your confusion, all left behind?

'Cause many years from now there will be new tomorrows
And still some sorrows
How does it feel? Oh, oh, oh

Do you know, know, know what it's like
To be searchin' in your own time?
All your attempting, experimenting, all on the climb, oh
Do you know, know, know what it's like

To be searching and suddenly find
All your illusion, all your confusion, all left behind?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Slade's song How Does It Feel explore the complex and sometimes overwhelming emotions that accompany personal growth and the passage of time. The song asks a series of questions about how it feels to experience new things, to go through changes, and to confront the unknown with varying degrees of confidence and trepidation.

The first two verses of the song focus on the feelings of uncertainty and disorientation that can arise in the face of change. The repeated question "How does it feel?" is both an expression of curiosity and a search for understanding. The lyrics suggest that no matter how confusing or challenging one's present circumstances may be, there are always more adventures to be had, more opportunities to explore and learn, and more feelings to experience.

The chorus of the song shifts the focus to the listener and asks them directly if they know what it's like to search for something important to them, to try new things, and to ultimately find what they were looking for. The repeated phrase "all your illusion, all your confusion, all left behind" suggests that the search itself is valuable and that the journey, with all its twists and turns, is just as important as the destination. The final verses remind us that even as time marches on, there will always be more tomorrows to look forward to, even if those tomorrows bring some sorrows along with them.

Overall, the lyrics to How Does It Feel are a meditation on the human experience of growth and change, with all its attendant joys and sorrows.

If Lennon and McCartney had recorded this it would have been lauded as an all-time classic.
For me it speaks louder with each passing year.

@geekpie100

If this had been released out of the blue, it would be remembered as a classic of the 70s. The problem was that people were unable to see past the music-hall Slade of 73 and 74.

@actionsub

True. The whole "Slade in Flame" film was a Hail Mary-type move to revive their fading popularity in the UK, while trying to get some momentum in America.
Slade's existing fans were disappointed by the gloomy tone of the movie, not to mention the melancholy soundtrack. Over in the US, it barely registered.
This song, despite popular opinion, was an absolute banger from Day One. Well produced and arranged, it showed the band could be more diverse than their raw party rock. Nearly 50 years later, this wistful tune is still very meaningful to me.

So far ahead of its time, the world just wasn’t ready for this classic.
They are now.
Brilliantly sung, performed recorded, and produced.
If Carlsberg made songs it would be How Does It Feel.

@bobballard3146

Quite simply one of the greatest records ever recorded.
