The Shape of Things to Come
Slade Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a new sun
Risin' up angry in the sky
And there's a new voice
Cryin' we're not afraid to die
Let the old world make believe
It's blind and deaf and dumb
But nothing can change the shape of things to come
There are changes
Lyin' ahead in every road
And there are new thoughts
Ready and waiting to explode
When tomorrow is today
The bells may toll for some
But nothing can change the shape of things to come
The future's comin' in, now
Sweet and strong
Ain't no-one gonna hold it back for long
There are new dreams
Crowdin' out old realities
There's revolution
Sweepin' in like a fresh new breeze
Let the old world make believe
It's blind and deaf and dumb
(But) nothing can change the shape of things
Nothing can change the shape of things
Nothing can change the shape of things

Nothing can change the shape of things
To come

Overall Meaning

The Shape of Things to Come by Slade is a song that talks about change, rebellion, and revolution. The opening lines, "There's a new sun rising up angry in the sky, and there's a new voice crying we're not afraid to die," suggest a theme of rebellion, where a new day has dawned, and people are no longer afraid to take on the establishment. The lyrics that follow talk about a new order that's emerging, with changes lying ahead in every road, and new thoughts ready to explode. The song is an anthem of hope and revolution, where people are ready for a new order, and nothing can stop the changes that are coming.

The song's chorus, "Let the old world make believe it's blind and deaf and dumb, but nothing can change the shape of things to come," is a powerful message that suggests that nothing can hold back the changes that are coming. The future is sweet and strong, and no one can stop it from coming. The last verse talks about revolution sweeping in like a fresh new breeze, which suggests that change is not only inevitable but desirable. The song ends with a message that nothing can change the shape of things to come, suggesting that the future is bright and full of opportunity.

Slade is for life not just for Christmas.

@seamusmcquaid1316

I remember seeing this on tops of pops I think, they were all dressed as skinheads and at the time I thought they are good. Wish they had made more stuff like this it was bit edgy and street for its time, but then I am talking about nearly 45 years ago. It was great to hear it again and reconnect with my youth.
