Their debut album, It's Five O'Clock Somewhere, was released in 1995. For the supporting tour, Slash enlisted James LoMenzo and Brian Tichy, of Pride & Glory, in place of Inez and Sorum, who had other commitments. They played shows in the US, Europe, Japan and Australia before Geffen Records pulled their financial support for the tour, with Slash returning to Guns N' Roses and Slash's Snakepit disbanding.
Following his departure from Guns N' Roses in 1996, Slash formed the cover band Slash's Blues Ball. After a tour in 1997, Slash approached Blues Ball bassist Johnny Griparic about forming a new lineup of Slash's Snakepit. The new lineup consisted of Slash, Griparic, singer Rod Jackson, guitarist Ryan Roxie, and drummer Matt Laug (Roxie and Laug were both former members of Alice Cooper's solo band). They recorded and released their second album, entitled Ain't Life Grand, in 2000, which was preceded by a tour supporting AC/DC and followed by their own headlining tour. For the tour, Keri Kelli joined the group in place of Ryan Roxie, who departed following the completion of the album. However, after the final show, Slash disbanded Snakepit due to a lack of commitment from his band members. Shortly after, Slash formed Velvet Revolver in 2002, along with drummer and fellow Guns N' Roses member Matt Sorum.

Slash's Snakepit Lyrics

But you're always getting into my head, dismissin' me
I let you do it but you're doin' it
In front of your friends
I'm not your doormat, I'm not the leader of a kick-you
When you're down on crusade, I want no part of that
I hear the rumors, goin' round that I'm not that man
I'm tired of playin' dumb
I'm tired of being pushed around
And if you think that I'm goin' soft
Here come some hard times
I got one mean bone in my body
I got one mean bone in my hand
You are a parasite, you latched on
And now I'm up to my neck in pain
All we do is fight, you bitch and moan so much
I think I need a hearing aid
My love won't overcome
The way you put me down
And if you think that I'm goin' soft
Here come some hard times
I got one mean bone in my body
I got one mean bone in my hand
In "Mean Bone", Slash's Snakepit are addressing someone who's constantly putting them down and trying to make them feel inferior. The song expresses feelings of betrayal, frustration, and anger towards this person, who appears to be a friend or acquaintance. The lyrics talk about the fact that while Slash's Snakepit may not show it, this person's constant dismissing attitude is getting under their skin. The repetitive nature of the attacks is frustrating, and it has started to undermine the group's confidence, particularly when in the presence of others.
However, Slash's Snakepit does not see themselves as being the "doormat" in this situation. They are the "leader of a kick you when you're down crusade", standing up to this person who has been bringing them down for too long. The lyrics also suggest that there is a rumour going around about the band not being who they seem. This could be interpreted as people suggesting that they have changed or become more commercial, but Slash's Snakepit is adamant that they have not lost their edge.
Overall, "Mean Bone" is a defiant track that conveys frustration with someone who has been continuously putting them down. The lyrics let this person know that Slash's Snakepit has had enough of their attitude and is ready to fight back. The song is characterized by its intense guitar riffs and powerful vocals, adding to the overall message of resistance and strength.
