Hero
Slave Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The simple things that I take for granted will
Get away from me eventually
I was smacked around
And beaten to the ground
My head became a piece
Of broken coal
I never thought that I
Would ever let you in
All I did was criticize
You
You were my only hero
You saved me from the sea
So, come take a bow
My hero
You brought me back
To me
Bitter words were said
I screamed them all myself
I pounded on your door
Ten times or more
You got under my skin

But I didn't let you in
I put up doors to let you out

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Slave's song "Hero" speaks about taking certain aspects of life for granted and realizing their true value only after they are gone. The vocalist sings that he had been constantly criticized while becoming a broken version of himself, and he never believed that he would let anyone in. But the hero in the song had saved him from drowning in the sea of criticism and brought him back to the surface. The hero had a positive impact on the vocalist, who now praises and thanks the hero for regaining his lost confidence.

In the second stanza, the vocalist admits that he had been the one who always spoke bitter words and slammed doors on the hero's face. The hero had to knock ten times or more to get under his skin, but the singer never let him in. To keep the hero out of his world, he put up doors, but soon he realized that he was only keeping himself out. The hero helped him realize that he had been a victim of his own criticisms, and the hero had better causes to fight for, which made him the real hero.

An American hero who deserves much more recognition! 🇺🇸

Fascinating story, a real American hero. The Republican Party is always working hard to make voting more difficult. We need the passion of the Civil Rights movement again.

Mary Donohoe

How far down the Republican Party has gone from where it began. Shame on them. Robert Smalls was indeed an American hero, and all of South Carolina can be deeply proud of him. Thank you for this important story during Black History Month!
To the production crew of this video, I’d like to say that it was a brilliant idea to use a dark background. White people as well as Black were shown with dark skin in the drawings! Loved it. (I took it as a confirmation that we’re ALL Africans in the origins of our ancestry as Homo sapiens. 😉🙏🏼)
