Ninety Nine
Slaves Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A mannequin
The other day
She had fuck all to say
to me
such a shame
looks are deceiving
staring at the ceiling
thats better than me?
is it better than me?
come on, is it better than me?
Ninety nine
percent of the time
she lives in a hand
i cant understand why
Ninety nine
percent of the time
she lives in a hand
i cant understand why
Talking to
A statue
Of a little girl
Who reminds me of you
such a shame
looks are deceiving
staring at the ceiling
such a great shame
looks are deceiving
now youre staring at the ceiling
Ninety nine
percent of the time
she lives in a hand
i cant understand why
Ninety nine
percent of the time
she lives in a hand
i cant understand why
ninety nine
ninety nine
ninety nine
its always ninety nine
The lyrics of "Ninety Nine" by Slaves may appear somewhat cryptic at first, but a closer examination reveals quite a bit of subtext. The song speaks of talking to two different inanimate objects, a mannequin and a statue that reminds the singer of someone they know. The fact that these objects cannot respond or provide adequate company highlights the isolation and loneliness felt by the singer. The repetition of the phrase "looks are deceiving" adds to this sentiment, further emphasizing the idea that appearances do not tell the full story.
The song's chorus contains the repeated phrase, "ninety nine percent of the time she lives in a hand, I can't understand why." This metaphorical language suggests a sense of control or manipulation, with the singer feeling powerless or trapped. The final repetition of "ninety nine" drives this point home, perhaps highlighting a sense of futility in trying to understand or escape the situation.
