Get Up
Sleater-Kinney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And when the body finally starts to let go
let it all go at once
not piece by piece
but like a whole bucket of stars
dumped into the universe
Whoh! Watcb it go!
Good-bye small hands, good-bye small heart
good-bye small head
My soul is climbing tree trunks
and swinging from every branch

They're calling on me
they're calling on me

Do you think I'm an animal?
Am I not?
Do you like fur
Do you wanna come over
Are we captive only for a short time
Is there splendor, I'm not ashamed
Desire shoots through me
Like birds singing
(The way you move no ocean's waves were ever as fluid)

They're calling on me
they're calling on me

I hit the mark!
I target moon, I target sky, I target sun
Fall down on the world before it falls on you

Like beggars, like Stars
like whores, us all
Like beggars, like dogs
Like Stars, us all

Shoot straight for my heart
(And when you were near no sky was ever quite so clear)

Like stars, so small
Like us, when we fall
Like beggars, like whores

Like lovers, Get Up!
Get up, too far

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Sleater-Kinney's song "Get Up" is set around the concept of surrendering ourselves to the inevitable end. The lyricist urges us to let go of everything at once, rather than in pieces, and compared the release to a bucket of stars being emptied into the universe. This feeling of release and renunciation is metaphorically linked to a climbing soul; although the body may be small, the spirit is infinite and swings from every branch. The refrain of "they're calling on me" seems to imply an ethereal or otherworldly presence that the singer is responding to.

In the second verse, the lyrics of "Get Up" take on a more introspective quality. The first line of the verse is a call to question if the listener thinks of the singer as an animal, and if they like fur. This is both an acknowledgement of the physical body and a metaphor for how we view ourselves in the world. The lyricist goes on to ask if we are "captive only for a short time", suggesting that life is fleeting and we should seize every moment. Finally, there is the declaration that "desire shoots through me like birds singing". The lyricist is taking pleasure in feeling alive and wanting to experience everything that life has to offer.

The final stanza of "Get Up" has an upbeat tone, encouraging listeners to rise to challenges and set lofty goals. The singer declares that they have "hit the mark!", and subsequently set their sights on the moon, sky, and sun. There is a sense of urgency to "Fall down on the world before it falls on you"; we must act boldly before it's too late. The closing lines of "Get Up", "like beggars like stars, like whores us all, like beggars like dogs like stars us all" bring us back to the beginning of the song, where everything and everyone is connected and equally important.

This song changed my trajectory. I was 16 and saw this video on MTV 120 minutes. I felt so connected to it. Listening to this pulls me back to a different place and time. It’s the pang of nostalgia before I became numb to the grind.
