I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone
Sleater-Kinney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's fine when it's all mine
It's on my wall, it's in my head
Memorize it 'til I'm dead
It's yours now I'm so bored

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I wanna be your Joey Ramone
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Pictures of me on your bedroom door
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Invite you back after the show
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'm the queen of rock and roll

I just don't care
Are you that scared?
I swear they're looking right at me
Push to the front so I can see
It's what I thought
It's rock and roll

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I wanna be your Thurston Moore
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Wrestle on the bedroom floor
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Always leave you wanting more
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Throw away those old records

Go downtown
Put on your best frown
Give me a chance
I know I can dance

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I wanna be your Joey Ramone
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Pictures of me on your bedroom door
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Invite you back after the show

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'm the queen of rock and roll

Overall Meaning

The song "I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone" by Sleater-Kinney is a tribute to the Ramones' lead singer, Joey Ramone, and his influence on punk rock. The lyrics express the desire to be like Joey, to have their picture on someone's wall, to be admired and adored. It's a common theme in rock music - the desire for fame and recognition, but with a punk twist.

The first verse talks about the obsession with a song or a band, listening to it over and over until it's memorized, then becoming bored with it. The second verse seems to be about being at a rock show, pushing to the front to get a better view, feeling self-conscious, but also feeling the power of rock and roll.

The chorus repeats the desire to be like Joey Ramone, a punk icon, and also mentions Thurston Moore, the lead singer of Sonic Youth. The lyrics suggest that the singer wishes to be the queen of rock and roll, someone who leaves an impression and is always remembered. The final verse is a call to action, wanting to go downtown and dance, to be given a chance to prove oneself.

Overall, the song is a catchy anthem about the desire to be a punk icon like Joey Ramone, to be admired, adored, and remembered.

Wow, absolute banger!

@SK-le1gm

Now, did Joey Ramone invite girls back after the show? For some reason that doesn’t jibe with my understanding of Joey Ramone, who was heartbroken etc. Maybe Johnny Thunders? Or maybe there’s a side to Joey that has remained a secret... I wonder if the band could shed some light on this for us, they may have some knowledge that ought to be shared if so.

@a.j.andthings8021

I don't think that was a line specifically applied to Joey Ramone, the whole song is criticizing the male rockstar archetype

@@a.j.andthings8021 Corin had better shut it up. If I were Joey I wouldn't want to walk around with her.

@anthonybottigliero8336

@@davidrule1335 Slow down there Hannity. If you are fine with male rock stars, why would it be wrong for a female rockstar to bring guys backstage?

Hopefully Thurston Moore appreciates you defending his virginity.

@davidrule1335

@@anthonybottigliero8336 I guess you have never heard the Ramones (I don't want to walk around with you) song?

@anthonybottigliero8336

@@davidrule1335 Long time Ramones fan, I've heard all their songs.

Hopefully Joey Ramone can thank you from beyond the grave for defending his virginity.
