When a Man Loves a Woman
Sledge Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When a man loves a woman
Can't keep his mind on nothing else
He'd change the world
For the good thing he's found
If she's bad, he can't see it
She can do no wrong
Turn his back on his best friend
If he put her down

When a man loves a woman
Spend his very last dime
Trying to hold on to what he needs
He'd give up all his comforts
And sleep out in the rain
If she said that's the way it ought to be

Well, this man loves you, woman
I gave you everything I had
Trying to hold on to your heartless love
Baby, please don't treat me bad

When a man loves a woman
Down deep in his soul
She can bring him such misery
If she plays him for a fool
He's the last one to know
Loving eyes can't ever see

When a man loves a woman
He can do her no wrong
He can never want some other girl

Yes, when a man loves a woman
I know exactly how he feels
'Cause baby, baby, you're my world

When a man loves a woman

Overall Meaning

The song When A Man Loves A Woman by Percy Sledge, released in 1966, is a classic ballad about the depth and intensity of true love. The lyrics begin with the statement that when a man loves a woman, he can't keep his mind on anything else. It consumes him entirely, and he would go to any lengths to be with the woman he loves. Even if she's not perfect, in his eyes, he can't see any of her flaws. He would even turn his back on his friends if they didn't accept his love.

The second verse talks about how a man in love would spend his last dime to keep his love, even if it meant sacrificing his own comforts. He would be willing to sleep out in the rain if she asked him to. It continues with the declaration that the singer loves the woman with all his heart and hopes that she will return his love.

The third verse talks about the power that the woman has over the man when he is in love. If she takes advantage of him or treats him poorly, it can bring him misery. But, no matter what she does, the man will continue to love her unconditionally. The chorus repeats that a man who loves a woman can never want anyone else, and the singer declares that the woman he's singing to is his entire world.

Overall, the song is a testament to the intensity of true love and the power it has over people. It's a classic that has been covered by many artists over the years and continues to be a popular love song.

My grandpa used to sing this to my grandmother and no matter where they were even driving he would pull over and drag her out of the car to dance. He used to sing it to her with such conviction he loved her more than life. He passed on in 2013 and grandma is now very sick and on her way out. I came here to listen to this to remind myself when it’s her time to cross over he will be there probably with the real Percy singing and dancing. I need to listen to this to remind myself she’s going to be in a better place with her love. Life can be so heartbreaking sometimes
