Waves
Sleeper Agent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your California washed away
Left us all their bills to pay
Without a friend, without a doubt
We walked it off until we drowned

Well at least we caught some waves
We spit them back at you
And now it feels so saturated
Oh I'd rather be serrated
With my oily legs and long blonde hair
Elevator meets you there

Would you hold me?
Do it, I think I would
Love me?
Won't but I know I think I could

Your New York's city's up all night
Coming down from '99
(But Oh I Love the aroma)
They're city boys, my silly friends
Endless bells and whistling
(Ahhhh)

In the sticks we're barefoot friends
We chew on leaves
And quote Huck Finn
(But Oh I never have told ya)
But Oh all the lights, I know it's a riot
But I can't help the fuss, I'd trade it for quiet

Would you hold me?
To it, I think I would
Love me?
Won't but I know I think I could..Go on
Hold me down, it's over now, I suppose
Your right hand your left brain
Is dialed and fed on control
Hold me down, it's over now, I suppose
Hold me down, it's over now, I suppose

Would you hold me?
Do it, I think I would
Love me?
Won't but I know I think I could
Do it, I think I would
Won't but I know I should

Do it, I think I would
Won't but I know I think I'd
Do it, I think I would
Won't but I know I think I'd
Do it, I think I would
Won't but I know I think I'd
Do it I think I would
Won't but I know I think I should

Your California washed away
Left us all their bills to pay
New York's city's up all night
Coming down from 99

At least we made some waves
We spit them back at you!

Overall Meaning

The song "Waves" by Sleeper Agent describes a narrative of a road trip taken from sunny and vibrant California to fast-paced New York City. The lyrics metaphorically describe the journey from California to New York as a journey from a happy and carefree life to a life full of challenges and responsibilities. California washed away with bills left to be paid, symbolizes a comfortable and easy life left behind, while the overwhelming city life of New York City is represented by city boys on their neon-lit streets. The song then goes on to depict a sense of being stuck in between two worlds, with the lyrics "In the sticks, we're barefoot friends, We chew on leaves and quote Huck Finn, But oh, all the lights, I know it's a riot, But I can't help the fuss, I'd trade it for quiet."

Towards the end, the song follows a delirious tone, expressing a sense of confusion with lyrics like "Hold me down, it's over now, I suppose, Your right hand your left brain," before ending with a plea - "Would you hold me? Do it, I think I would, Love me? Won't but I know I think I could." The song is a nostalgic ode to the bittersweet feeling of leaving behind a carefree and happy life for new challenges and opportunities.

Its definitely a good song. I was in a rental car and heard it on Xm radio and I was stressing out on how to know what that song was and the girl I was with said you can rewind it. And bam

@whatwhatinthebutt94

I remember when this song was still on the radio 5 years ago :/

@harrymurakami

These guys were so good. Wish they still made music

@ingridrodriguez6796

YOU GUYS. Omg omg omg ok I've been looking for this song for months. MONTHS. It was played on the radio here in Mexico a lot since it (apparently) came out, but they never said its name. And just now I was watching Bleachers' "I Wanna Get Better" and my gut feeling told me to click on the VERY LAST LINK and here I am!
I know you don't care but I just wanted to share my happiness with y'all! It was well worth the wait!!!

One of my favourite songs ever and then I just saw her on The Voice!! Crazy world! Sleeper Agent has toured all the places and even played Coachella... isn't that MAJOR success already?

@mattbrown12345

I was thinking the same thing why leave an awesome band to hang out the 2016 version of Gwen stefani...so dumb

@ohmyirina

Kristina Bolin I wish then never broke up. I actually enjoyed their music and met them at one of the Warped Tours a few years back. I’m assuming they broke up because of the personal issues (since they were engaged). I don’t know if that’s true but I really wished they stayed as a band!
