They first started playing live at the end of that year as a trio consisting of Joileah Maddock (guitar), Kasey Boekholt (guitar) and Brandon Relf (drums). Bassist Kenseth Thibideau joined the group in 2003. The band released their debut, self titled, album through Temporary Residence records in 2005. Around that same time, guitarist Joileah left the band due to relocation, and her friend Amber Coffman replaced her on guitar. With Amber they wrote and recorded 3 tracks that will appear on their second album Growing. In early 2007 Joileah returned to her former position and the original lineup resumed.

Really a shame how underrated Sleeping People is. Those math-rock drums are to die for.

Brandon Relf is an incredible drummer. I used to see them play in San Diego and they put on intense live shows. His drum setup was pretty janky. He played only a 3 piece kit that had a big hi tom at a weird angle over his kick drum and a big floor tom with one ride and one crash cymbal. With the hyper playing and choppy parts you'd think he'd use more drums, cymbals and extras but to me his set up always looked like a noob teenage drummer's drum set. He always killed it.
