Make Believe
Sleepy Tea Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If what you want
is taken from
the magazines
your neighbour's house
and all you've got
is not enough to fuel your misdirected love

We'll make believe that it's love

My precious son
i will not judge
you will be what you become
and you are not
the sum of all your pretty pieces when you go

We'll make believe that it's love

When you start again

We'll make believe that it's love.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sleepy Tea's song "Make Believe" are open to interpretation, but one key theme seems to be the idea of creating a fantasy version of love when reality falls short. The opening lines suggest that the singer or protagonist might be trying to live up to some unattainable standard set by the media or their neighbors. They might feel like they don't have enough to offer in terms of material possessions or social status to attract love, but instead of giving up or feeling worthless, they decide to "make believe" that what they do have is enough.

This concept is reinforced later in the song with the line "you are not the sum of all your pretty pieces when you go." It's possible that this is addressed to a child, given the reference to "my precious son" in the previous line. The singer might be reassuring the child that they don't need to worry about fitting into a certain mold or measuring up to specific expectations in order to be loved and valued. Instead, they can create a version of love that works for them, even if it's not what others might expect or approve of.

Overall, "Make Believe" seems to be a song about finding hope and comfort in imagination and empathy. By embracing an imaginative approach to love and accepting ourselves and others for who they are, we can start again and create something meaningful and beautiful.

I'm Beyond Disappointed the original video of him on guitar doing this was deleted. It was more simple and raw and much more beautiful. I've searched everywhere for it :( all artists eventually think they have to over produce to become recognized but it really just makes it less interesting :/
