The band tour the U.S. frequently in a renovated vintage Green Tortoise bus, and their live performances have featured puppet shows, pseudo-scientific scholarly presentations, and performances by members of the Butoh group inkBoat. SGM's music has been categorized as anything from avant-prog to art rock to experimental metal to RIO (Rock In Opposition). Many reviewers have remarked that the group is altogether unclassifiable.
The band uses many homemade devices as instruments, such as the viking row-boat and the spring-nail guitar. Rathbun plays a stringed bass instrument of his own construction called The Log which uses piano strings and is perhaps 7 feet long; it is played with two sticks: one in the left hand generally used as a fret, another in the right hand striking the strings. Mellender's percussion instruments consist of restaurant kitchen equipment, trash can lids, and other "found" metal objects, in addition to traditional percussion instruments.
They've announced their imminent end, as their last concerts will be held early April around California. But 2011 will still see a new album, a movie and a live DVD.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum Lyrics

The lyrics of "Ambugaton" by Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are enigmatic and open to interpretation. The song presents a dark and twisted vision of a world run by a corrupt and powerful elite who are met with resistance by an underground group of rebels. The opening lines set the tone for the song: "The march of the great procession, a necklace of tongues writhing in syncopation." This suggests a powerful and ominous force, advancing with a sense of inevitability. The image of a "necklace of tongues" evokes ideas of conformity and control.
As the song progresses, we hear about the rebellion against this oppressive force. The line "The ghosts of the dead displaced in a sea of living" implies a sense of displacement and struggle. The rebels are fighting to reclaim what has been lost to them, to reclaim a sense of agency in a world that is dominated by power and control. The chorus, "Ambugaton!" may be an expression of defiance, a rallying cry for the resistance, or it may be a word invented by the band, intended to represent the indescribable force that the rebels are fighting against.
Overall, "Ambugaton" is a powerful and thought-provoking song that offers a dark and unsettling vision of a world in turmoil. The lyrics suggest a struggle between the forces of oppression and the forces of resistance, with the ultimate outcome yet to be decided.
