Equilibrium
Slice the Cake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All is not well in this conjugal state
Of stalemate interdependence
Fragile mirror-image hanging on a knife-edge;
A microcosmic indecency.
A new kind of metafiction,
To recreate the bigger picture
Given the kiss of death before
It had its chance to breathe

And breathe it shall.

I bear witness to the monolith
Of self-evident cowardice,
Born and bred of infallibility,
Is human nature not the culprit?
Unanimous in our contempt of
The regressive sense of intuitive momentum,
We abandon all common reason
To adapt to being poisoned,

So we shall breathe smoke, collective
In our pursuit of self-destruction.

Who propagates the seeds of
Discontent in the hearts of men?
For fertile soil bears no grudge
Against the flowering of beauty.
A state of equilibrium must be unearthed,

Lest the scales tip all too far
And bury the diamonds in the rough.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Equilibrium" by Slice the Cake are reflective of the volatile state of human relationships and our collective pursuit of self-destruction. The first verse describes a relationship that has reached a stalemate, where both parties are equally dependent on each other, yet fragile and hanging on a knife-edge. The metaphor of a microcosmic indecency describes the relationship's flawed state, where the opportunity for growth and renewal is lost before it even had a chance to take root. However, the verses end on a hopeful note, suggesting that even though the relationship may seem hopeless, there is still a chance for it to breathe and grow.

The second verse shifts the focus to the larger state of human nature, where self-evident cowardice is born and cultivated out of infallibility. The lyrics question whether human nature is the culprit, and if it is our collective contempt of intuition that leads us to abandon all common reason, and adapt to being poisoned. This line is a nod to the idea that society is constantly pressuring individuals to conform to its expectations, even if it means sacrificing their own well-being. The lyrics end on a dark note, suggesting that we will continue to breathe smoke collectively, in our pursuit of self-destruction.

The final verse suggests that the root of all discontent lies in the hearts of men, and that it is only when we unearth a state of equilibrium that we can prevent the scales from tipping too far and bury the diamonds in the rough. The verse suggests that we are all responsible for maintaining this state of equilibrium, and that it is only through our collective effort and appreciation of beauty that we can achieve it.

Yo

@Dick Van Draeman Dude, it's sad to see this band is still small even having great musicians conforming it. I remember listened to them for the first time back in 2015 and fell in love immediately thanks to this song. I'm glad they keep bringing us more quality music.

its very hard to make it as a metal musician in modern times....unfortunately its not the 80s anymore, most starve before they do anything. I decided to quit and go to college and treat it as a hobby and record and tour when i can front the cash myself
