The band had gone through numerous line-up changes over the years, but singer Ryan Kepke and Joe Nixon (drums) performed on every release, while Jeremiah Brown (bass) played on all except their final album, Far From Nowhere. This was their first release without Tooth and Nail Records, which they left, not for religious reasons, but merely because their contract had finished and the band felt the need for a change. Far From Nowhere was released on SideOneDummy Records in the summer of 2003.
The band was particularly successful in the Christian punk scene in the late 90s and early 2000s and toured alongside their peers, both secular and Christian (most notably bands such as Face to Face and MxPx, respectively). They also played certain legs of the Vans Warped Tour in 2003.
Fall
Slick Shoes Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My eyes always stray from you,
But you are always watching over me.
I don't know how you could stand having me as your son.
I'm always so selfish and you are always so kind.
Lord, you're always there for me.
Without you I don't know what I would do.
Without you I don't know what I would do.
When everything is going well I rarely stop and thank you.
But, when nothing is going tight I stop and complain to you.
Don't let me fall.
The lyrics to Slick Shoes' song "Fall" express a confession of distraction and selfishness towards the world, with a reliance on the ever-watchful eyes of God. The singer admits to straying from God but feels comforted by the fact that God is always there, revealing a sense of guilt in the singer's actions towards their relationship with God.
The contrast between the singer's selfishness and God's kindness also highlights the singer's gratitude for God's presence in their life. The singer acknowledges that they may forget to be thankful when things are going well. But when things are tough, the singer comes to God with complaints, exemplifying the singer's need for God's guidance and support. In essence, the song portrays the singer's inherent human flaws, but also their unwavering love for God's guidance and protection.
