"We're a touring act, and we've been on the road pretty much non-stop over the last decade," explains Doughty, offering that the more recent creation of the band's own local recording studio and rehearsal clubhouse (within the warehouse district of Mission Valley just inland of Ocean Beach) certainly aided and influenced their last release Top of the World, and has inspired their latest sessions, which the band anticipates could stretch into a few different recording projects.
"Over the last 3 years we started our own studio and within the last 9 months, anticipating the window for new album sessions, the band has invested into innovations and equipment upgrades for the studio in a quest to capture and progress our signature sound forward. Having our own studio really enables us to make records at our own pace and to make the right records, hopefully (with a grin) at various stages of our career,” Doughty continues. “What's nice about having our own environment to record in and analyze the music is it really lets you keep an organic feel. For us, I feel like it's a step into the next level, as far as understanding the process of recording, understanding the process of songwriting. We took everything that we've learned over the years and really put it into this place and into our music.” The property also houses the creative loft space that has become the official offices of the band’s own label Stoopid Records, which issued the band’s second album in 1999 Acoustic Roots, and has continued to be their preferred method of distributing the band’s recorded material.
Another key ingredient to what makes Slightly Stoopid extraordinarily special is the inclusion of several musical guests, both live and in the studio. "It really keeps that 'family atmosphere' for us,” says Doughty. “I think it really shows in the music — we live for the spirit of collaboration and on Top of The World we had G. Love, Angelo Moore from Fishbone, Don Carlos, Barrington Levy, Ian Neville from Dumpstaphunk, Tory Ruffin from Morris Day and the Time and Fishbone, and singer/songwriter Angela Hunte. Angelo Moore to me is one of the greatest front-men to ever step foot on a stage. As a fan and out of respect, I try to do something with Angelo every time we have a record, really. If you listen to his lyrics, his vocal performance—I don't know who could keep up with Angelo on stage. Don Carlos from Black Uhuru is one of the legendary reggae singers of all time and we've had the pleasure of working with him the last few years. We've been friends with G. Love for over 15 years, and we've been able to work together quite a few different times in the studio. It seems like second nature. Whenever you're recording with G., it's almost like you're really just hanging out with your bro and you happen to hit record. We've done so many shows together and so many studio sessions, it becomes second nature.“
Ever Really Wanted

And if you ever really needed, while you were all alone.
And time and trouble did you ever think that you would be with your back against the wall?
But now your older, so much wiser now, the one who wants to make the call.
A little bolder now, cause while you're all alone, don't really know why you be holding on, to what was wrong.
And if you ever really thought that you would be the one with your back against the wall.
But now you rolling through like you never knew what it was to lose it all.
And if you see what the other man see you know we must agree.
And if you do what the other man do, oh lord, we cannot be, the way that we wanted, the way that you need for the one that should be.
(Angelo Moore)
Have you ever really wanted someone to call your own? Someone, something, some place, sometime! We shove along, and live the life, when you need someone, someone to call your own,
My brotha, my sista, its good to have a place for home.
The lost and isolated, picking up the phone, but all I gets a ringtone.
I've got myself, but its always good to have a confident and a helping hand, cause we need eachother, don't you understand well!
Hear what the other man say, you better stop and see.
And if you see what the other man see, you know we must agree.
And if you do what t he other man do, oh lord, we cannot be, the way that we wanted the way the you need for the one that should be.
We can hope for better skies and we don't see why others lie all day and night you can't deny these things we've seen through others eyes
The long and windey road, is the road that's been less traveled on,
I said the long and windey road, is the road you take while moving on
And if you hear what the other man say, you better stop and see.
And if you see what the other man see you know we must agree.
And if you do what the other man do, oh lord, we cannot be, the way that we wanted, the way that you need for the one that should be.
The song "Ever Really Wanted" by Slightly Stoopid featuring Angelo Moore is a poignant reflection on the need for a sense of belonging and companionship in our lives. It highlights the human desire for someone to call our own and the feeling of loneliness that comes with being alone. The lyrics explore our emotions when we face setbacks in life, and how our experiences shape our perspectives and help us make better decisions.
The first verse of the song speaks to the idea that as we grow older and wiser, we become more confident in making our own choices. We become bolder and less afraid of taking risks. The lyrics suggest that holding onto what was wrong only prolongs our pain and creates further struggles. The second verse follows a similar theme, pointing out that we need to listen to others and agree to disagree. It highlights the importance of community and how working together can help us achieve a sense of unity.
The chorus talks about the need to find our own place in the world and how we can only achieve this by being true to ourselves. It suggests that we should not follow others blindly but should make our own decisions and stick to them. The bridge of the song speaks to the challenges we face in life and how we can learn from them. It speaks of taking the "long and windy road" and persevering through difficulties to make progress.
