Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows. The band rapidly rose to fame following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album, Iowa, although darker in tone, made the band more popular. After a brief hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses, before going on another hiatus and returning in 2008 with its fourth album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. After another long hiatus, Slipknot released its fifth studio album, .5: The Gray Chapter, in 2014. Their sixth studio album, We Are Not Your Kind, was released on August 9, 2019. Their seventh studio album, The End, So Far, was released on September 30, 2022. The band has released two live albums titled 9.0: Live and Day of the Gusano: Live in Mexico, a compilation album titled Antennas to Hell, and five live DVDs. The band has sold 30 million records worldwide.

Slipknot Lyrics

A pleasure that'll take my mind off the reality of my life
My past life
Life as I know it know
And whatever may come, it slowly disappears
To somewhere in the back of my mind
It will remain there until I wish to retrieve it
A break from the pressures of life
And everything that lay in the palm of life's hands, life's hands
This mode is incredible
It's out of this world
Too bad I must always leave it
But that's life
That's life (yeah)
That's life (yeah)
That's life (yeah)
Yes, yes, yes, yes, oh yes
The lyrics to Slipknot's song "Gently" are a reflection of the singer's desire to escape from the harsh reality of life and seek solace in a world of pleasure. The pleasure that he seeks is only temporary and will not last forever. The singer acknowledges that whatever may come in life, the temporary pleasure will slowly disappear and reside in the back of his mind until he wishes to retrieve it.
The singer yearns for a break from the pressures of life, and desires a respite from everything that lays in the palm of life's hands. He implies that he is tired of living life by someone else's rules, and desires to take over his life for a while. The mode he is in at that moment is described as incredible and out of this world, but he is painfully aware that he must eventually leave it, as it is only a temporary escape from the reality of his life.
The repetition of the phrase "That's life" in the chorus reminds us that the singer is cognizant of the fact that the pleasure he seeks will always be temporary, and that he must eventually return to the challenges of his daily life. But the phrase is also tinged with a hint of resignation – the singer has learned to accept that life is not perfect and that you can't always get what you want.
