Underwhelmed
Sloan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She was underwhelmed, if that's a word
I know it's not, 'cause I looked it up
That's one of those skills that I learned in my school

I was overwhelmed, and I'm sure of that one
'cause I learned it back in grade school
When I was young
She said, "You is funny"
I said, "You are funny"
She said, "Thank you"
and I said, "Nevermind"
She rolled her eyes
Her beautiful eyes

The point is not the grammar
It's the feeling
That is certainly in my heart
But not in hers

But not in hers
But not in hers
But not in hers
But not in hers

We were talkin' about people that eat meat
I felt like an ass 'cause I was one
She said, "It's okay," but I felt like
I just ate my young

She is obviously a person with a cause
I told her that I don't smoke or drink
She told me to loosen up on her way to the L.C.

She skips her classes and gets good grades
I go to my courses rain or shine
She's passin' her classes while I attend mine

While I attend mine
While I attend mine
While I attend mine
While I attend

She wrote out a story about her life
I think it included something about me
I'm not sure of that but I'm sure of one thing
Her spelling's atrocious

She told me to read between the lines
And tell her exactly what I got out of it
I told her affection had two F's
Especially when you're dealing with me

I usually notice all the little things
One time I was proud of it, she says it's annoying
She cursed me up and down and rolled her are's, her beautiful are's

She says I'm caught up in triviality
All I really want to know is what she thinks of me
I think my love for her makes me miss the point

I miss the point, I miss the point
I miss the point, I miss the point

I miss the point, I miss the point
I miss the point, Hey mister

Overall Meaning

The song "Underwhelmed" by Sloan tells the story of a conversation between two people who have different outlooks on life. The singer expresses his feelings of overwhelm towards the woman he is talking to, while she seems to be underwhelmed by the conversation. They talk about various topics, including their personal habits and beliefs, with the singer trying desperately to connect with her on a deeper level. However, he ultimately realizes that they are not on the same page and that he is missing the point of their interaction.

The lyrics also touch upon themes of insecurity and inferiority, as the singer feels self-conscious about his own shortcomings compared to the woman he is talking to. He feels embarrassed for eating meat in front of her, and tries to impress her by telling her about his healthy habits like not smoking or drinking. However, she seems unimpressed by his efforts and tells him to loosen up.

The song also highlights the importance of communication and understanding between two people. The woman tells the singer to "read between the lines" and figure out what she is trying to say. However, the singer is so caught up in his own feelings that he misses the point and fails to connect with her in a meaningful way.

Overall, "Underwhelmed" is a poignant and relatable song about the challenges of communication and connection in relationships.

The best written song I've ever heard. No chorus, just a melody and song structure that playfully weaves in and out. And whenever this is on, I always have to stop what I'm doing to sing along with this line: "She said, 'It's OK,' but I felt like I just ate my young." Pure poetry.

Jack None

There’s very clearly a chorus.

Sloan is such a great band. Why are people even mentioning that they're Canadian as if its something to point out. Canada has tons of great musicians.

Stevo935

It's a shame how The Hip and Rush usually get anointed as "best Canadian rock bands", while no one remembers Sloan. These guys were/are still one of the best rock bands ever from this country, as far as I'm concerned.

Sam Squanch

+Stevo935 I remember Sloan as one of the best Canadian bands. I do.

Also wasn't The Band Canadian except for one member?

FiTTyFouR

+Stevo935 Yeah and The Trews are also really good

TheHowTwos

+Stevo935 What do you mean that no one remembers Sloan? Maybe you don't, but I'm sure most of Canada does. Chart Magazine picked One Chord to Another as the 9th greatest album of all time.

I hear you.... there was something missing from their sound though; hard to describe but I feel like they were one step away from stardom....There are moments in the song that need to be fixed, with the harmony, (listen to these bars at 0:30). But then they kill it! (0:37). So close.
